Alternative Drug Treatments In Thailand
Wat Thamkrabok
This programme is only offered at this temple. At its core is the Satja vow which entails the visitor taking an oath not to resort to drinks or drugs again. Of course, keeping promises is not typically a trait of an addict but it is highly important in this particular programme. If the oath is broken, even once, the visitor is not allowed to return. If he sticks with it, he can find himself at the temple from anywhere between ten days and a few months.
During the first five days, the addict goes through the vomiting part of the treatment. The vomiting is a reaction from an emetic created by herbs, a recipe devised by one of the temple’s founders. It is a communal part of the treatment and those who have completed the process themselves still attend to support those who are still going through it.
The idea is to speed up the withdrawal symptoms. Whilst being given the emetic they drink water which they then vomit into a gutter.
Thamkrabok
This takes place at an addiction monastery. Detoxification is a large part of this programme and lasts for ten days. Here the vow of the Satja to never take drink or drugs again is also taken. The detox treatment is based on herbal potions, tea and herbal saunas. The programme works out at around 3 per day and anyone and everyone is welcome.
The visitor has the option, once he has completed the detoxification treatment, to continue the programme for another eighteen days in which he would work, learn and meditate. This portion of the programme is to strengthen the resolve of those who wish to remain disciplined and stick to the Satja. The monks don’t talk about success rates but previous visitors indicate the programme is fairly successful. They do believe that the Satja, if adhered to, steers the individual in the right direction i.e. away from the perils of drink and drugs.
