Finding A Shipping Company That You Can Rely On

August 4th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Real Estate

If you are moving house internationally, shipping companies can be of great assistance. Whether it is across the country or across the world, you need to know that your shipping firm is responsible and reliable. A good shipping firm will allay your fears and treat your items with great and ensure that they arrive at their destination in a timely manner.

It does not matter what needs to be shipped, there will be a company that specializes in moving it. There are many hundreds of thousands of packages and larger objects being delivered all around the globe each year. Whatever your needs may be, there is a shipping company who can handle everything you need shipped.

Shipping companies do not just help businesses move products around the globe. That is only one facet of the shipping industry. Perhaps you recently decided to move your whole business to another country. You may have a whole building of supplies and resources that need to be moved as well. They can help you ship everything that you need to move and ensure it is all delivered in the most appropriate way.

It takes research on your part to locate a reputable and efficient shipping company that fits your needs. There are a few questions to ask that will help determine the class of service they will provide. Find out their terms of service, whether or not they are a registered company, and the length of time for shipment. A number of things can happen to your goods while in transport, so make sure to inquire about their insurance and whether or not damage and loss is covered with their service.

There are many supplemental documents and requirements for shipping overseas. A quality shipping company will inform you of the responsibilities you have to insure all of that information is provided, like the various shipping and clearance duties and customs charges. They should also provide a ballpark cost of those items. This information is a critical step in shipment; without the right preparations, your shipping plans will hit an unfortunate snag at a time when they are hardest to resolve.

So, do not take any chances and do not assume that all shipping companies are equal. Speak to a few different companies and ask them about the points mentioned in this article. Decide which one to use based mainly on the answers that they give, and not on the price that they quote you.

Multiple Uses Of A Portable Bar Code Reader

August 3rd, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Gadgets and Gizmos

We all know how important computers have become in our lives, as well as our work. Could you just imagine how productive you’d be without one? The portable barcode scanner has also become a crucial tool and plays a big part in the retail and manufacturing business.

In both retail and large warehouse environments, the hand-held scanner enables one keep track of goods easily and quickly while remaining mobile. In smaller spaces, a user might be able to move the inventory to a scanning junction but for larger items scattered across a large storage space, this is a tedious task.

There are so many kinds of bar code readers available in the market today. You will find bar code technology being used not only in retail stores but also within health and export trades. For every kind of trade that requires a huge number of information to be entered swiftly and precisely, a bar code reader would be considered an utter necessity.

Although in the past, the use of the wired versions of bar code readers have been considered essential, the portable barcode scanner has become today’s equivalent. With the fast pace of today’s business world, speed and efficiently is crucial to success.

These cordless or “wireless” readers are pretty easy to use and are not much different from the wired versions. The major differences are that they’re little and portable, and allow you to send or receive scanned symbol data back and forth, between the data terminal and the hand-held scanner.

There are so many models to choose from and their prices range from affordable to ultra-expensive depending on what brand of scanner you want as well as what functionality it offers. For in-house bar code readers, most brands offer you the choice of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth technology.

While P.O.S. (point of sale) type scanners can work continuously, portable barcode scanners rely on battery power and require you to recharge it often. There are mobile phones with bar code reading capabilities built in as well but that will just increase the frequency in which you have to charge the device.

In conclusion, whether you’re starting a manufacturing, shipping or retail business, you’ll need to keep productivity up and costs down – in this case, time and human errors will push your labor costs up. Investing in portable barcode readers for your company is a rewarding investment and although the technology may not be 100% spot on, it’d cost you much more not to use this tool as a part of your retail or production business.

Do not buy without researching first. Check out our tips concerning the Wasp barcode scanner.

Moving Blankets Can Help In The Moving Process

July 30th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Cars & Trucks

People who are moving are always at risk of losing their possessions to bumpy roads, sharp turns and other situations likely to make your things tumble around in the back of a moving van. You can lessen the risk of broken tables, chairs, picture frames and other valuable items through the use of moving blankets. These blankets act as layers between stacked objects and go in between the floor and sides of the moving van and your possessions.

These blankets are designed to keep your packed belongings safe and protect them from scratches, bangs and nicks while you’re transporting your things. Professional movers also use these moving blankets; they can also help in moving items around by putting things like furniture, large auto supplies and goods that are stored on pallets on a moving blanket and dragging it from room to room or out to the truck.

Moving blankets are available in a variety of weights and sizes, including large furniture pads, large van pads, woven, multicolored, lightweight and burlap space savers. The blankets and furniture pads range in price from $6.99 for a single lightweight moving blanket to $15.99 to a single furniture pad; you can also purchase these blankets by the dozen. Moving blankets also are available in different colors and patterns as well, so people are sure to find the moving blanket that fits their moving needs.

You may be able to rent furniture pads and moving blankets from a professional mover, which would save movers the trouble of buying them if they are not planning on moving again for a while. Should you decide to invest in your own moving blankets, you will get your money’s worth. You may use them to move furniture or large items around the house or when you are bringing large items home or helping other people move.

You can also use your moving blankets in storage; cover furniture or automobile parts so they do not get dusty or damaged by the elements. This also helps to keep stacked items more stable and less likely to slide around and do damage to your things while they’re sitting in your garage.

Moving blankets are good for people who are moving; using them makes moving easier and less stressful and are more likely to get your belongings to their new home safely. And you’re sure to find what you need with all of the options.

Find The Best Mechanic To Keep Your Truck Running Right

July 21st, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Cars & Trucks

In the trucking world there are good mechanics and bad mechanics. When searching for a new mechanic, take the approach that they are less than honest. When you take this perspective, you ensure that you won’t get taken for a ride. Some mechanics may make some unnecessary repairs but are less likely to do so if you have the right approach. The few bad mechanics can spoil it for the many honest ones. But don’t get caught off guard.

If you are driving a used truck, things are going to need repair and you will be visiting shops. The more miles your truck has on it, the more visits to a maintenance facility you are going to make. My best advice would be to build a relationship with your local dealer. If the dealer believes there is a chance you will come back, they are less likely to take you to the cleaners every time you show up. If they consider you an out of town guest you can really get taken for a ride.

When taking your truck in for repairs, the first step is to get a detailed estimate that includes details of the work to be completed, labor estimates and price estimates. After you have your estimate, it’s time to call your local dealer. Let the dealer know that you need repairs and have a detailed estimate. Ask if they are willing to match or even beat your estimate.

After you’ve finished your negotiating, make it perfectly clear that you do not expect any changes to the estimate. Get a firm commitment on price and let your mechanic know that the price is firm. It’s worth repeating that you are only paying the price quoted and not a cent more. Through repetition, the mechanic will know that additional costs are unacceptable. Let him know that you are only willing to pay the original price quoted.

We sell quite a few Volvo trucks at and run a fleet of almost exclusively Volvo 670s at Hoovestol Incorporated. The biggest worry that most people have is that for some of the things that go wrong with these trucks, you need to take them to a Volvo shop. I would say this has gotten better in recent years with a lot of the major fleets running Volvo trucks. However, it seems like a lot of these shops know that they are the only show in town and that you have no other alternatives. However, you can still use the techniques I described above to minimize the damage, and get back on the road for the lowest possible price. My hope is that using the experience I’ve had will help a little.

Shipping Cargo From China – What You Need To Know

July 12th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Legal

To the uninitiated, shipping from China looks like a complicated, disorganized process. There are political, legal and cultural factors that, in fact, do complicate matters, but when you select the right China-based partners you can rely on their expertise. What you need to know about shipping cargo from China involves government regulations in China and the destination country, as well as freight forwarding companies and various logistical matters. As in any other specialized operation, you should stick with your core activity and get the right people to help you navigate through the entire process.

It is easier to understand what is going on if you look at the individual steps involved. There are about 10-12 steps, depending on variables, involving about that same number of different parties. Briefly, the process works like this for a shipment out of South Mainland China to the U.S.:

- Factory advises that cargo is ready

-Customs broker in China will arrange clearance and inspection

-Based on factory license, Chinese customs allows export

-Trucking firm takes cargo to Hong Kong border

-Chinese customs clears export to Hong Kong

-Cargo delivered to port or airport

-Hong Kong export clearance allows booking with shipper

-Cargo arrives at destination

-U.S. customs is cleared

-Trucking firm takes cargo to destination

Through these steps you have dealt with factory managers, buyers, brokers, customs officials in three locations, trucking firms and shopping companies. The questions should immediately present themselves to you: How much of this do you want to manage? Who can help you the most?

Go with what you know

First-timers will rarely be able to organize and manager the entire process of sourcing from China, whether it’s one time only or a regular weekly thing. In fact, it is best that you and your firm focus on what you do best (buying, selling, marketing, service, manufacturing, whatever it is) rather than become a logistics company. Selecting a good international shipper may seem the best place to start, but shipping firms do not have the breadth of experience in most cases to help you cut through bureaucratic red tape, attend to the many legalities, work within the cultural milieu or resolve misunderstandings.

The answer is clear. An attorney that knows China, speaks the language, understands the culture and is experienced in international shipping is the way to go. Not only will the attorney be able to ensure all your dealings are correctly managed, he or she will handle the myriad different details and allow you to concentrate on your central business activities. Because you now have the support of someone with expertise in Chinese business and logistics, you will enjoy the benefits of the attorney’s many contacts and get the best, most cost-effective deals. Your lawyer, a China expert, will be the most important piece of this puzzle, the central hub coordinating the many different activities that can become dizzyingly complex at times.

Large-scale networking

You can think of this as a networking process. Rather than making multiple, often overlapping connections to 10-12 different parties (from freight forwarders and local trucking firms to customs officials in various countries), creating something of a tangled web if you are not careful, you make one connection to a lawyer experienced in shipping from China. The lawyer’s connections then become available to you for the solution of your particular challenge, whether it’s a single shipment or a regular schedule of shipments. The time you save through this top-down networking is substantial and, therefore, valuable, offsetting the cost of the attorney and creating a cost-effective solution.

There is simply no substitute for real-world experience when it comes to shipping from China. No matter how many how-to books you’ve read on the subject, and regardless of how all the Chinese regulations explain the process, there is always a difference (sometimes major) between the way things are written and the way things actually operate. You need an attorney with direct experience in China to help guide you through the process and, in fact, protect your interests. It is the single best decision you can make if you are involved, or will become involved, in shipping cargo from China.

By working with an attorney who knows China, its people, its laws and its customs, you will save yourself time, money and aggravation. Stay focused on your core operations, while getting expert assistance in the specialized areas, and your cargo will be delivered on time, every time.

Moving Boxes: 3 Things To Look For

June 30th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Shopping and Product Reviews

Sure, any box can be a moving box, but are your boxes reliable? Believe it or not, having the right kind of box is going to be the difference between a smooth move and a hectic one. Not having the right box can result in boxes giving out and breaking your belongings. Not having the right box can also mean that you’re not packing everything you could inside of one box. That can actually increase your moving costs if you’re using a moving service that charges by the hour, by the day, or by the truckload. More boxes mean more time and more space, so you want to make sure you plan this out right.

The supermarket box

Many individuals call their local supermarket and ask them if they can put boxes aside for them because they are moving. What happens is the mover finds that there are more little boxes than big boxes when they pick them up. Another thing to consider is the fact that all of these boxes have been used to ship items before and have now been broken down. This means you have to tape them back together over top of the old tape that was cut through when the employees were breaking them down. This can actually interfere with how well the bottom of the box comes together when you are taping it back together.

Supermarket boxes also consist of cardboard durability that can vary. It can be somewhat hard to determine how much weight a box can actually hold and, with all of the small boxes, you’re risking having to make more trips while you move.

The moving box

Moving supply stores sell moving boxes that are meant just for moving. They are durable so that your belongings are protected and they come in the sizes you need. You do have the option to choose from new boxes or used moving boxes. Used boxes are going to be cheaper, of course. However, you have to ask yourself if you want boxes someone else has used before. If you don’t have a problem with that, then you can go for the used box.

Here are three things you want to look for in a moving box:

The size: You may need different sizes for different things. If you have fragile items, you don’t want to stack too many of them on top of each other. However, books and other unbreakable items can be stacked until a comfortable weight is reached within the box.

Weight: It is important that you evaluate the weight that the box is capable of holding. This is something a supermarket box won’t tell you. You are safer knowing the weight because you then know how much you can put inside the box.

Type: There are different types of boxes such as dish boxes and wardrobe boxes. These boxes are specially designed to better protect your belongings. By moving items in boxes that are especially made for those items, you are reducing the chances of damage.

What to do?

It is up to you as to what boxes you want to use, but know that the moving box is going to give you the security you need when looking for moving boxes and moving supplies. Sometimes it’s not worth taking the risk and hoping that a box won’t break. Sometimes hoping that a box that is destined to break won’t break isn’t going to do much good. But having a box that is designed for what you’re using it for and even comes with usage instructions to ensure the utmost safety of your items is worth the cost.
