Gaining An Edge In Combat Sports By Rapidly Losing Weight

June 22nd, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Sales

Every athlete in any form of combat sport, from boxing to wrestling to mixed martial arts will tell fans and friends that a large part of their sport is cutting weight. For those that aren’t knowledgable, the process of cutting weight typically takes place in the last few days or up to a week before the competition and involves rapidly losing weight in order to fit into the right weight class. Many different techniques are used to make sure that the fighter, boxer or wrestler tips the traditional scales or digital scale at exactly the right weight at which they’re supposed to compete. Weight cutting often times leads to extreme dehydration and isn’t healthy on the body so athletes must be very careful to only cut under the supervision of somebody who really knows what they’re doing and should always have somebody with them to help in case things get out of hand.

One thing that the competitors do a lot in order to lose weight quickly is to sit in the sauna. The sauna comes in handy because the steam and high temperatures lead to heat, obviously, which results in intense sweating. This sweat, in addition to being the body’s attempt at trying to cool the person down, is water being released from the body and results in the loss of water weight. Human bodies are mostly made of water, and given that the athlete has probably been trying to keep well hydrated in the weeks prior to cutting weight they typically have lots of water weight to get rid of. This releasing of water weight can lead to drastic weight loss in a very short amount of time, with some combat athletes known to cut up to twenty pounds of water weight in a single day, and then rehydrating after weigh ins to regain strength.

Another, and perhaps clear, weight cutting strategy is to eat almost nothing and drink very little water. Typically only done at the very last stages of weight cutting, dehydrating oneself obviously reduces the amount of water and food weight that makes its way into the body. However, the obvious downside is that the body feels less strong when it isn’t being properly nourished, and therefore this strategy is used as more of a last resort than anything in terms of dropping the last few pounds. After being put on the scales, as with cutting water weight, athletes often times will gorge themselves on a huge meal the day or night before competition to regain strength lost in starving the few days prior.

One final strategy that people use to cut weight rapidly before a wrestling match, boxing match, or fight is to wear a special suit while working out that increases greatly the amount of sweat generated. Although these sweat suits are hard to come by and expensive, a trash bag can be substituted to help up sweat during workouts.

As previously stated, cutting weight is a sometimes annoying and often times difficult part of combat sports and typically done to gain a size advantage over opposition that compete at the same weight class.

A Few Rules To Follow In A Science Laboratory

May 22nd, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Sales

Information without practicality, it seems to be useless. If you are an aspiring scientist, a laboratory at your school is a place where you will have to go every other day. Even if you are a professional already, safety rules in a lab are mandatory for you also. Following general rules will save you from a lot of mistakes in your readings, essentially the ones including the use of weighing scales. For instance, you might not notice the zero error on the digital scale yet later come to know that this affects your results a lot. Therefore, it is important that you know the general rules at your lab.

The most vital rule of a science lab is to stay safe. To stay safe, basically you need to take care on what are you wearing. Majority of the accidents happening in the lab are due to inappropriate clothing. Some people spill acids and other corrosive materials on on their clothes or on others, thus causing to accidents. Loose clothings and stuff that easily catch fire, like nylon, should also be avoided. Similarly, long locks must be tied back and everyone should wear a lab coat and gloves for their safety.

Eating and drinking in the lab must be strictly not allowed by the person in charge. Any kind of food should never be brought to the lab. Similarly, you must never use the laboratory glassware for drinking and as utensils for eating food.

Never play around in the laboratory. A lab must never be taken as a playarea. Therefore, you should never run or play in a area because such a practice may make the lab apparatus to topple over and create risks.

You must be aware of the location of the fire extinguisher. If a ther is a fire hazard, you would not be running here while searching for the fire extinguisher. If you accidently catch fire, recall the basic rule of stop, drop and roll. Stay calm, stop wherever you are, drop yourself on the floor and roll till it extinguish the fire.

When making use of a pipette, you must never use your mouth to suck in the chemical you are working on. Sucking it through your mouth has a risk of the chemical accidently going into your gut. Thus, always use your hand to fill the pipette.

You should wear safety goggles in the lab to save your eyes from fumes or accidental spillage. If somehow you get any thing in your eye, instantly wash it with a lot of water and move your eyeballs frequently while you do so. If any part of your skin comes in contact with chemicals, you must instantly wash it with a lot of water.

You must never inhale any chemical. Some chemicals are very lethal and just sniffing them will put you at a edge of hazards.

do not leave your apparatus unattended. Stick to the instructions and keep an eye on what is happening during your practical, unless stated in your sheet of instruction. When you are mixing chemicals to one another, do it slowly and then look at the the results as you add bit by bit, initially. Mixing the chemicals all too quickly can be seriously hazardous and may also cause fires in extreme cases.

The Feral Nature Of Time

May 11th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Sales

It is difficult to weigh the importance of time. Time cannot be weighed on scales. A digital scale isn’t sensitive enough to measure the value of time. All of time could pass without any measure of its value. How can the future be measured? How can the value be calculated? There are tables to measure appreciation, depreciation, life expectancy and formulas to figure out how much insurance is required based on some obscure calculation of age and time. But, as everyone knows time is relative, its weight and value always in flux.

Most people give the past a tremendous amount of weight and value. An individual’s identity is often rooted in the past and the perception of the past. Therapists confront the weight of the past everyday when working with adults that still suffer from the blows of childhood. A man settles for a factory job driving rivets into iron because his step-father kept telling him he was stupid. That voice, the voice of his step father now what he tells himself. An adult coming from poverty may spend his life trying to make enough money to feel secure, but no amount will ever be enough. A child abused may become a terrified grown up, or worse an abuser as well. The weight of the past can be someone’s vice and squeeze the the breath of authentic living from their experience of life.

The future is made up of a similar kind of weight, a weight of potential. Many people spend their life saving and planning so that someday they can get that car, buy that house, have those babies, or retire to a better life. Often every decision is a calculated hedge against potential threats. Too many people shelve their joy in life believing they are going to get to it later. Lives go by in an attempt to build security and prevent some unspecified crisis.

The weight of the past, the focus on the future squashes the experience of the present into a small pellet, like something a mouse might leave by the molding in the kitchen. The past is over and the future unknown. The only time that is certain is the one that in now. The experience of life is the moment that is right now. It doesn’t mean that the past is hurled out the window and the future ignored. The past teaches us and helps us live fully in the present. The scar on the hand from touching the hot stove reminds us that stoves can be hot. The dream of building a home in the mountains might determine the path we take in life. But the choices happen now, the experience of being alive can only happen now. The outcome of those choices may lead to a completely different experience never imagined. Time can only really be measured in in the present.

The value of time is determined not by months and years but by showing up right here, right now.

What Is A Data Logger

May 9th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Hardware

Real time data always needs to be collected and processed for many organizations around the globe. Doing this usually strains the resources and budget of many of these organization though. Going out and collection large amounts of data is just something that people do not want to do. Luckily, data loggers can help. What is a data logger?

Data loggers are very useful for measuring and counting vast amounts of things. Usually, they are computerized and do not require any help from people. They often have many sensors that are programmed to pick up different things.

There are many uses for data loggers in almost every profession all around the globe. Many different societies and associations use them to assist them in many things. Data loggers make the lives of many people much easier than they would be without them.

One of the main uses of a data logger system is at weather stations. These loggers are often used to measure the amounts of accumulation of precipitation and are also used to measure wind speed and temperature accurately. These loggers then log the information into a database. This is why it is so easy to pull up temperatures for this day five years ago.

The weather stations around the globe that take advantage of these systems are usually unattended. There is no need to be at these stations because everything, such as the measuring and counting, is done by computers. There is really not a need for people to be there.

Data loggers are also used by many geologists and other scientists. A geologist will use them to collect fume data from volcanoes and log it and compare it to fume levels that are known to be deadly. Geologists also use these loggers to measure vibrations and earthquakes.

Railway companies are almost dependent on these logging systems. They use them in almost every different part of the job. Loggers are often used to measure the number of trains and the length of trains that pass certain parts of the tracks or that go through rail yards. They are also used to warn a driver if a wheel is getting hot or if anything is wrong with his train as he passes by a sensor.

These loggers are also used a lot in wildlife research and wildlife programs. For animals that are tagged, a researcher may scan the tat, which will automatically be logged and sent to a database. When the animal get its tag scanned again the system will recognize it and show how far it has travelled.

The highway department also uses these loggers a lot. Traffic volume on certain parts of highways are often logged to see any change from day to day. Loggers are also used to keep track of speeders that pass unmarked unmanned speed posts. The violators are sent tickets in the mail.

The data logging systems of today are getting more advanced every year. They help companies and business all over the globe increase their total efficiency and decrease their expenses. Businesses would be nowhere today without these devices. These loggers are very important to the total structure of business as we know it, and now the question of what is a data logger will never have to be asked again.

How To Select Humidity Sensors

April 16th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Hardware

Most people are familiar with relative humidity as discussed by the local weather reporter. Humidity has a significant effect on comfort as most of us know. Very few people realize that humidity is important to scientists and engineers in many different ways. Weather reporters, scientists and engineers all need some way to measure humidity. This short article will describe some types of humidity sensors commonly used to get the measurements.

Humidity is the measure of water vapor suspended is air or other gas. Water vapor is invisible when suspended in a gas. Fog, steam, rain, clouds or other precipitation are water condensing out of suspension and becoming visible (and wet). Scientists have different methods to measure humidity in terms directly related to the way the measurements are used. Some humidity measurements can be mathematically converted to other measurement scales (within certain limits).

The most common humidity measurements are dew point, relative humidity, and relative humidity. Each of these is best suited for specific applications where the range and accuracy of the measured values is used in research or process control. Humidity measurement has advanced along with other technologies and is a common part daily life.

The “bad hair day” is caused by the way human hair responds to humidity. Early scientists took note of this effect and built the first relative humidity instruments around it. Horse hair was also used in some indicators and chart recorders. With the invention of synthetic materials like nylon, hair-based instruments became obsolete. Synthetic fibers have more predictable responses and are more easily calibrated. The invention of transistors and solid-state electronics led to the modern humidity sensor that is tiny, relatively inexpensive and much more robust.

Many weather reports include a dew point reading. This is the temperature at which the water vapor in air begins to condense into liquid. Dew point figures are very important in some manufacturing processes such as painting or anything that uses compressed air. Dew points were originally measured using chilled mirror technology. This could be limited to a certain range of temperatures and calibration was unstable. Modern solid-state dew point sensors are accurate down to -40degrees F. And are much more dependable.

Absolute humidity is the precise measurement or calculation of the mass of water vapor in a given volume of air or other gas. (Expressed as grams per cubic meter or grains per cubic foot) This is the most useful measurement for a variety of applications. One interesting application is in drag racing. The grains [of water in the ambient air] number is used by all race teams in setting up their racing engines. Modern electronics can measure absolute humidity at temperatures greater than 200 degrees C in almost any environment.

Engineers sometimes encounter problems with manufacturing processes that are related to humidity. With modern sensors the environment can be monitored and the process adjusted for better results. Painting processes are particularly sensitive to humidity changes.

Humidity sensor manufacturers can deliver accuracy, robustness, size, and cost to meet just about any scientific or technological requirement. Some online research is sure to reveal a variety of options for any application. This article should provide just enough information to make your research more effective.

How to Save Time and Money by Using a Parts Counting Scale System

April 15th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in business

The recent economic climate has made businesses look at places where they can save money to streamline their operation. One area where vast sums of money can be save is in labour costs. By removing laborious and time consuming tasks from a routine you automatically save money.

Manufacturing & Assembly: Most companies still employee warehouse staff who pick parts ready for large production lines to use in assembly. Using a counting scale in this scenario can save a lot of time, in stead of manually counting small nuts and bolts or electrical components, counting scales will do this for you. Using a counting scale will also eliminate any potential missing parts which can cause issues on an assembly line.

Using a counting scale is a good way to eliminates mistakes and errors due to the boring task of manual counting.

Suppliers of Components: When a customer orders parts and components it is important to fulfill there order as specified. If they order 500 nuts then they want 500 nuts, any orders that fall short could potentially trigger a customer compliant, these can be hard to quantify in cost, especially if the customer decides to look elsewhere. If you give the customer over 500 nuts the likelihood is that they won’t complain, but you have just lost money for parts that you are not charging for. Multiply that across every single order you do a year.

Printing: Companies that produce printed materials such as brochures, tickets and leaflets often batch them into quantities. It is important from a cost point to get accurate counts on items such as concert tickets that have a high face value. Using a counting scale eradicates the laborious and costly process of hand counting. Imagine the time saved counting out 100 A4 leaflets accurately without having to thumb each sheet.

There are many examples of where counting scales can save companies time and money. Any process that involves a human counting manually is prone to errors, counting scales can help to eliminate those errors. Lately more modern counting scales can be interfaced with printers, barcode scanners and PC’s to give a complete stock control solution.

Imagine the cost savings on having a central database controlling your stock with amendments made on the shop floor for goods in and good out. Tight stock control is even more important now due to the current economic climate.

Learn more about different Counting Scales here. The Ohaus EC Counting Scale is a low cost and popular model. You should visit to find out about how you can save money by operating a parts counting scale.
