The Basics Of Honda Performance: Getting The Engine To Breathe
Some people will try to tell you that Honda performance is not achievable but they are completely wrong. People around the world have been successfully modifying all kinds of Honda models for years, and have managed to extract a great deal of performance out of their engines. In fact they offer a great base for modifying as the parts are relatively cheap and easily available.
There are a number of issues that you must address in order to achieve more horsepower, regardless of which Honda model you drive. Honda produces cars from the factory which have to perform to strict sound, noise vibration and harshness (NVM) and emissions standards, none of which probably bother you. This leads to inefficient systems within the mechanical package, to get extra horsepower and performance we must exploit these inefficiencies.
The first, and most important step, is to make sure that the engine can breathe properly. Begin on the intake side of the engine by upgrading your Honda air intake. Preferably get a cold air intake system which routes cold air from behind the front bumper straight into your engine. Cold air will always make more power than warm air.
The other restrictive system is on the other side of the engine and is the exhaust system. Unfortunately it is too small for the motor ad must therefore be upgraded to achieve maximum Honda performance. I would suggest that you get a nice stainless steel header, preferably a 4-1 design for maximum top end power, a decat pipe (depending on your local regulations) and exhaust piping approximately half to one inch larger than your standard piping.
To take advantage of this extra breathing capacity you must install an aftermarket ECU (computer). As the factory ECU is programmed to deal with only factory air and fuel values it can not adjust to different levels of power.
Once all this is complete it is likely that your car will have been completely transformed. With these modifications you can probably expect a good thirty per cent extra power, but this will depend on which Honda model you have. Remember the key to Honda performance is getting your engine to breathe properly.
