A College Student’s View Of The Last Airbender

July 16th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Opinions

Okay I just got back from seeing The Last Airbender. And although there are some hardcore Avatar fans out there that are disappointed in the movie, I honestly didn’t have that big of a problem with it. Although the funny pronunciations of the names will annoy you along with the altering of some of the scenes, but still it got the same point across and the fight sequences were awesome. But the characters, the plot, and the action are all worth looking at when looking at this movie.

The television show contains certain character traits, especially personalities that a lot of the fans have come to love. This movie, does not give the full effect of the characters’ personalities, it only gives it to you in small spurts. Aang is a very happy easily excitable child that is constantly laughing, but in the movie he is basically an adult trapped in a child’s body. And yes according to the show Aang is very serious at times as it shows in the movie, but he also likes to have fun, something the movie seems to have overlooked. Some characters that had the correct personalities but not quite the right looks were Prince Zuko and Iroh.

The plot was very similar to the show. The end and begin in pretty much the same spots as the show, but they middle parts have been altered a little. Such as in the movie Aang gives a speech to the Earthbender inside a camp, and this speech in the show is given by Katara. Stuff like that may or may not bother you, but it is different. To me, the unique pronunciations of names actually bothered me more.

The action scenes in this movie are nicely intense. The movie like the television show, both appear like they took time to learn martial arts and do them properly rather than just faking it. The fight scenes, the bending, and the 3D effects were all really nicely done. Even if some aspects of the plot and characters anger you, the fighting is worth seeing.

So overall, there are high strengths and high weaknesses to this movie. Having said that, it is still worth seeing. A lot of people were bothered by the changing of races and things of that matter, it did not bother me I cared much more about the characters and the plot than I did about races. I would give this a 4 out of 5, because of the few changes that annoyed me. Check it out! Also the series is available below.

Why The MLB Is Backwards

July 2nd, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Baseball

Following Tuesday night’s dugout clearing fight between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees, the MLB handed down suspensions to the 2 core culprits – Jorge Posada and Jesse Carlson. For their part in Tuesday night’s mle, Posada and Carlson each got 4-game suspensions. Their suspensions had been lowered to three games because neither Posada nor Carlson contested the penalty.

If someone might make clear to me how the league came up with four games each, I would genuinely appreciate it.

When it comes to how many games a player is hit with for his actions, it’s anybody’s guess. It appears to me there are no firm rules for penalties. That is a giant issue in my mind.

Let’s have a look at a couple of non-steroid linked suspensions that have been handed out thus far in ‘09:

Does anybody else see what is ridiculous here? There’s no rhyme or reason for any of the suspensions.

How did Youkilis and Porcello get five games for inciting a dugout-clearing brawl, however Posada and Carlson only got three games? What did Youkilis and Porcello do differently that their brawl resulted in 2 more games?

In my belief, a dugout-clearing fight is a dugout-clearing brawl. They are like coincidences; there are no degrees.

How does Beckett get a 6-game suspension for pitching at someone’s head, although Zambrano becomes the same game suspension for beating up a water cooler? I did not know potentially ending someone’s career may be just as damaging as beating up an inert object.

This isn’t a Red Sox-Yankee dilemma – this is a common sense problem. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills even writing something like this. If you do A, you are hit with B. It’s as basic as that.

The MLB – and I mean you Bob Watson – needs to draw up a benchmark penalty for every infringement.

At present, it just doesn’t make a single bit of sense.

My Encounter With Del Potro

June 30th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Tennis

August twelfth, ‘09 was a bright, sunny Wednesday morning in Montreal. Since I was working at the Rogers Cup, I got admission to the grounds and had specifically asked for Wednesday off so I could go check out all the professionals’ warmups. It was indeed a rich schedule with the top ten in action during the day.

At 11 that day, a pal and I walked over toward Court four where the world’s top ranked player, Roger Federer, was set to arrive at within 30 minutes. Already jam packed with roughly a few hundred people, there was very little room to move.

As the time approached, the place was filled with people who eagerly waited to get a glimpse of the best to ever play the game. With the sun scorching at 95 levels fahrenheit, we watched him loosen up and start hitting balls. To be honest, it was fairly ordinary and was scheduled to go on for 2 hours.

So, slowly, we move outside the crowd and come to an open spot. I glance up at Court 4 on the other side to see a tall, lanky competitor dressed in a pink Nike T-shirt and white shorts pounding a few balls. I look closer and indeed came to see it was Juan Martin Del Potro.

As he came to the exit gate, there happened to be six fans waiting for him to earn his signature and he did give them out. As he signed my picture and proceeded to my friend, I told him “I wish you the best of luck in your competition later.”

He turned around and had a giant grin on his face and claimed “Thank you so very much for your support.” He seemed to be really pleased with what I had told him.

As he won yesterday, the irony of this situation just came to my mind. The fact that basically not a soul was present to root for him and Rog had a ton of people. Occasionally, it is better to be let alone than to be persistently followed.

Del Potro played a fantastic match this week and is entirely worthy of his title. Let’s go!

Need To See A New Family Movie?

June 14th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Family

Since I just got to see the Disney movie Prince of Persia, I have for you the Prince of Persia movie review. The ending somewhat worked for the film although I was not pleased with it, however the characters were in sync with the game and the action and plot were good and easy to follow. Although Disney may have slightly messed up the ending, I think the casting was really good. Spoilers are contained in this review.

The plot was very easy to keep up with. The prince was found by the king in the marketplace when he was standing up for a friend. This courageous act impressed the king and he immediately adopted him making him a prince. He is later, when he is older, deceived by his brother into giving the king a robe that kills him. Now the prince is trying to figure out why his brother would set him up like this, while being a fugitive on the run. Will he be able to prove that his is not guilty and try to find out for sure was it his brother that did this?

The characters stayed pretty close to the game. The flirting between the prince and princess are expressed through their constant banter. The prince is charming and slightly awkward like he supposed to and the princess is head strong and spirited as ever. The way they look, act, dress, all the way down to the accent are great for this movie.

The action in the movie was really nicely done. The fight sequences along with the ones that included the dagger were entertaining as well interesting. Most of the action kept you on the end of your seat. There were a few instances that the special effects looked generated but it didn’t happen so often that it was a turn off, but I was surprised that it happened at all. Also the ending perfectly wrapped up everything in what seems to be a perfect bow. They found who really killed the king, which I won’t give away, and everyone lives because time was reversed. It’s a good family ending but with how cut throat it was becoming it seems to contrast with everyone just living.

In conclusion this would have to be 4 out of 5. It worth seeing but due to the special effect mishaps and the ending for me, it’s still a four. If you want something that boys will enjoy because of the action and girls can enjoy because of the love story this is a great family movie. Although, really the entire family will get a kick out of this movie. Well that’s it for this Prince of Persia movie review.

Can You Get Money From The Government?

June 8th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Opinions

People need money and that is the main reason they go online looking for grants. Now that Obama is President, it almost appears that some people voted for him because they thought they could get free things from him. While the Democrats do have a history of handing out a good portion of our money, it is unreasonable to think that Obama will just give out money. They might have thought that the government would cut everyone a stimulus check similar to what George W. Bush did several years ago.

The amount of the stimulus bill is staggering and we have all hear reports of the numbers on television and radio. This has undoubtedly led people to think that they can get some of it and they are keen to find out how. They might not care that all that money is coming directly from our taxes and the taxes of future generations. It will be our kids and grandkids that have to pay for much of the trouble that we have gotten ourselves into.

It is very sad when you think about the numbers of people that hope they can make some kind of score off the Obama presidency. While the government is there to help us all and maintain order in our society, it is not there to just give us things. Most of us have gotten into a bad financial position because we refuse to save and spend more than we have. That is not a problem that is any business of our government.

There are indeed some people that will get government assistance in many different ways but no one is going to directly get free money out of this. Unless Obama decides to cut all lower income families a stimulus check, there will be no handouts. The chance of that happening though, is slim as there just isn’t enough money to go around.

People do need help but the stimulus bill is mostly going to help businesses and organizations. The individual who is out of work might possibly benefit by being able to get some sort of job that results from this bill but that might be the only way. Applying for a government grant will be just as tedious as always and not too many are handed out to individual people. No matter what your situation is, the stimulus package is not going to make your life any better in the short run.

A College Student’s View Of Nightmare On Elm Street

May 22nd, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Opinions

Okay I just got back from seeing the new Freddy movie, and I present to you the Nightmare on Elm Street movie review. Now for those of you who are not familiar with the concept of Freddy Krueger, he’s a guy that plagues a town by killing people in their nightmares, I don’t know how you couldn’t know the concept but here it is just the same. (This does contain spoilers.) The movie was actually pretty good even though it was not a new concept, and surprisingly it was not as scary as I would have first assumed. But don’t let that discourage you.

Riddled with a mixture of surprises, the plot was actually nicely done. This movie misleads the audience into thinking that they are following one main character but they aren’t. The opening guy dies, which makes the audience wonder who the heck the protagonist is supposed to be. The next character suffers the same fate, so you really wonder who the protagonist is. It makes you wonder, is there a protagonist or not, and if this same concept throughout the whole movie until everyone is dead. The movie presents a backstory for Freddy that is well put together, making him out to be possibly innocent, blamed for child molestation, creating a “crimes of the parents” motif.

The characters are not as fully developed as the character of Freddy. We can see Freddy although we do not know the past motivation for him possibly committing the crime, but still there is the full attempt at fleshing out this burned, nightmare killing man. With the other characters, there is a lack of detail placed into them, such as why are they even friends? Their personalities did not match and yet they were close? So it seemed like the writers thought more about how these people would interact rather than why they would.

The action in the movie was steady, especially when you’re not really sure when they are dreaming and when they are awake. And when reality starts to mesh with the nightmare world it becomes more intense. However the audience is still wondering at the end is Freddy the bad guy? I won’t give that away, but I will say the last scene in the movie is confusing. A person dies by Freddy’s hand, but who the heck is dreaming?

In conclusion, this movie is definitely worth seeing. As a horror movie it does have a plot that is reasonable and easy to follow, and there are a few surprises. If you’re looking to be greatly scared, this is probably not for you. I give it a 4 out 5 stars.

Our Country is Threatened by High Debt

April 8th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Opinions

Recently there have been an increasing number of reports concerning scams connected to applications for government grants. There are some reputable companies that charge fees for information on grants, but they are established companies that have been in business for some time. Now there has been increased interest in locating programs, government bureaucrats have started to label them as scams.

There are no special Obama stimulus grants in the recent bill passed by the Democrats. Unfortunately, most people do not understand that this means that there is no money in the bill for individuals. Yes, some people will get a newly created job because of the bill, or will get help paying their mortgage, but no individual will get cash from the government.

America is in the midst of a catastrophic economic crunch. Government officials are continuing to run up the deficit without thought for the consequences. Many people voted for President Obama because they wanted a change in the way government functioned. However, few understand the extent of the trouble we are in. There has been change, but not the right kind.

The only scam most of us see it the US government itself. This stimulus bill is probably the biggest scam the country has ever seen as the government gives away all our tax dollars. Hopefully, people will soon realize this and make it very hard for the politicians to do any more damage.

The problem lies in the fact that most people believe the government has access to unlimited funds, and have no true knowledge of how the economy really works. By continuing down the path we are following now, we will soon find out the spending more money is only multiplying our economy problems. Unfortunately, by the time most people figure this out, it will be too late to fix.
