When starting a new job, the common question arises, “What should I wear to work?” There are different reasons behind the question; one person may want to slip into the company with ease, and another person may be wondering whether they can go to work more casually and avoid the suit and tie combination. But what is the point of uniform, and who actually needs to wear it?

One of the most common job interview questions is ‘Tell me all about yourself’. This is often asked by a job interviewer as an ice-breaker at the start of the job interview. As first impressions are so important it is critical that a job interview candidate has a great reply.

The interviewer may ask the question because they haven’t read your resume and know little about you. They may ask the question because they are new to job interviewing and have little idea how to proceed. It may be the job interviewer is stalling for time and wants to see what the candidate has to say before plunging headlong into a series of more probing job related questions.

This question gives you the opportunity to list your job related skills one by one. Tell the interviewer why you are the perfect fit for the job. There are two areas that an interviewer wants to cover. Firstly do you have the necessary skills and attributes and experience to do the job. Hopefully the answer is ‘YES’. Secondly are you the best candidate for the job. You do not know who the competition is but the interviewer will have a short list. Make sure your answer reflects the fact that you are on it!

You need to have a prepared answer. Use the job description to base your answer on. Your answer must contain all these job related aspects of the job description and also all the personal attributes listed in the job description. You are reverse engineering your answer based on the job description. Each answer needs to be tailored to the job description so the interviewer can match these off in their mind.

The personal summary statement should be 30 to 40 words long. It should cover what you have done, the experience you have gained, the skills that you have learned and the personal attributes you will bring to the job.

Have a list of relevant examples ready to back up your claims. This question will form the backbone of your whole application. It is important for your success throughout the interview that you have examples which can be called upon at any time to assure the interviewer that you are not lying. If they are not asked at this point they may be required later. I would actually strongly suggest you offer examples as often as you can to back the claims up to make them seem more real and believable. It allows the interviewer to paint a picture in their mind.

Visual awareness of the candidate in the role is a powerful tool for persuading the interviewer to hire you. In addition to this make sure that you can add some benefits that you bring with you. Do you have special software skills, sales experience or marketing campaign knowledge that would be additionally beneficial that you think the other candidates could not have?
