Five Job Winning Interview Tips
Starting a career is always nerve-racking. After spending a lot of time and energy preparing yourself for a field of work, you want to do your best to market yourself to many possible employers. Once you’ve sent your resume to different job openings, you wait in hopes that it leads to an interview. When the call comes for the interview, it is important to be ready and leave a good impression on your interviewer.
Making a good first impression can be clouded by nerves and stress during the interview process. Doing a little research and taking into consideration a few tips for interviews can make the process run smoothly and allow you to leave a lasting impression on potential employers:
1. Be familiar with the location prior to the day of the interview. Have a map or GPS navigation system and review it before you head out on the day of the interview. This allows you to be confident that you will get where you need to be on time without any unforeseen issues such as getting lost or having inaccurate directions. If you are very nervous, take a test drive the day before the interview.
2. Know where you are going. Print directions and check a map to make sure you know exactly how to get to the interview location.
3. Think carefully about your attire. It is always professional to wear a suit on an interview. If you are worried about what you are wearing, ere on the side of caution and stick with conservative colors, footwear, makeup and accessories.
4. Dress to impress. Always wear a suit to an interview. For men, make sure you are cleanly shaven and ladies; keep the makeup to an appropriate minimum. Before you even begin the interview, the employer will be judging your appearance.
5. Watch the clock. Being on time will set your interview off on the right foot. Being too early may raise anxiety and leave to feeling nervous, but arriving 10-15 minutes ahead of schedule gives your future employers a good sense of your reliability and promptness. Beginning an interview by being late, especially without notifying the interviewer, will only leave you, and potentially the employer, feeling rushed and unprepared.
Lasting impressions come from having a solid, well-spoken interview that shows your future employer why you are the best person for the job. The interview is the first place where you get to show off your talent and your abilities that make you the best candidate for the job. Being unprepared only heightens anxiety levels and stress. Using these tips will help calm your nerves and, hopefully, lead to an offer for a job that will set your career in motion.
