NFL’s Packers Confirm Their Interest In Michael Vick

July 29th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Football

If you’ve kept up with the football news lately, you may have seen the rumors that the Green Bay Packers are going after Michael Vick. These rumors are in fact true, as the team came out publicly and acknowledged this recently. I’m not the biggest Vick fan out there, but as a player, he could be a valuable asset to the team.

Pros: Michael Vick is a weapon, plain and simple. In addition to his status as a quarterback, he could easily be used as a running back in certain situations, and at the wide receiver position as well. He’s genuinely one of the fastest players in the game, and the Packers playbook could see a major boost with both Vick and Aaron Rodgers on the field at once.

Vick would obviously be a backup to Rodgers should he join the team, but a team never knows when its backup will be called upon. So many teams have seen their chances blown when their starting QB goes down with injury, and the prospect of Michael Vick as backup to Rodgers could somewhat shield the team should Rodgers be hurt.

Cons: One of the drawbacks with Vick is that he isn’t a great quarterback. Even though he has 71 TDs he also has thrown 52 interceptions, and even though he is a mobile quarterback he was sacked 187 times when he was with the Falcons, he also averaged about 6 yards lost every time he was sacked, which no team including the packers want.

Additionally, his completion percentage as a quarterback is historically low, at just 54%. He throws a fair number of interceptions too, leading to a low QB rating of 75.7.

Skills aside, there’s another negative that comes with Vick’s potential involvement, and that’s the criticism and controversy the Packers will stir up should they sign him. Vick’s dog fighting scandal still hasn’t left the public eye, and the media may be wary of this move.

All in all, would the team be better off with Vick or without him? I’m inclined to say they should take the chance and go for it. The NFC North will be a competitive division this season, and any edge will help.

The media attention will be big but since Green Bay plays in the smallest market in the NFL, its not New York, LA, or Chicago so it won’t be that bad. There is one person who will be affected if Vick is signed and that is Aaron Rodgers. While Rodgers will always be compared to Favre he may very well have a biggest distraction sitting on the bench behind him…Michael Vick.

Green Bay Packers are going for #13

May 6th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Football

The Green Bay Packers may not have made it to the Super Bowl in the 2008 season, but they – as always – gave fans an action packed season. Their opening game, last year, was so enticing that the remaining season tickets were gone before you could blink an eye. Even with quarterback woes, the team was able to put their game faces on and move forward as if nothing was going on. With these issues out of the way, the Green Bay Packers should be able to storm the field, in 2009, and be one of a handful of teams that – at the very least – makes it to the playoffs.

As one of the first professional football teams, the Green Bay Packers have been scoring touchdowns since as early as 1919. The Green Bay Press Gazette allowed a group of young men to use their company field for practice and games, while the Indian Packing Company paid for their jerseys. The Indian Packing Company is the inspiration behind the name of the Green Bay Packers.

Their first couple years of play were so good that they quickly captured the attention of private sponsors who worked at the Gazette. After a few years with the sponsors, the Packers were quickly franchised into the NFL for their professional career! Ticket sales, for the first 10 years, were tough. This had nothing to do with a lack of fans; it was strictly due to financial hardships that thousands were facing.

It was not long before finances began to look better and Packers fans could finally start buying those season tickets they had been waiting for! These fans are the ones who hold the Packers – proudly – up on a pedestal. The team has many titles, but to top that off, 21 of the players and coaches are now members of the Football Hall of Fame (only one other team has accomplished this same number, and then some). Names like Vincent Lombardi, Bart Starr, Willie Davis, Ray Nitschke, and Brett Favre all went through the Packers to get their Hall of Fame memberships.

Eleven short years after they first began playing as a private team, the Packers had won three championship titles. It was not long after the playoff games and the NFL that the team won nine more championship titles. The Packers have accomplished what no other NFL team has, they won 3-championship titles 3-years in a row – and they have done this twice!

Three of their closest possessions are their Super Bowl rings from 1966, 1967, and again in 1996. The combination of their accomplishments puts the Green Bay Packers at the top of the list in the NFL, giving them the title of one of the best teams ever.

Green Bay Packers fans are known as cheese heads simply because of the team’s hometown. These fans are some of the most loyal throughout the sport, and they will continue their legendary status by following and supporting the team through the many ups and downs that are likely to come. There is no doubt, over the last 50 years that tickets to Green Bay Packers games are limited, if they can be found at all and this will not change anytime soon.

Anthony Smith – a free agent – will be joining the Green Bay Packers in the 2009 season. Smith was one of the main reasons his last team made it to the championship last season – 2008. The Packers, their fans, coaches, and management are confident that Smiths addition – to the team – along with their solid play list, the team will make it to the championship game this year!
