Butternut Squash: The Unknown Fruit

March 21st, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Food and Drink

Butternut squash is a fruit that grows on a vine. As it ripens it’s colour turns orange and many say it tastes similar to a pumpkin. In Australia, it is actually regarded as a pumpkin.

Squash is high in fibre, vitamin C, manganese, magnesium, potassium and vitamin A, making it an all round healthy fruit. It is in season in the UK between September and January, but it is often imported from the Mediterranean during the summer months.

Butternut squash is great for cooking and is quite versatile. It can be used in soups, bakes and even curry. In South Africa it is often wrapped in tin foil and baked with nutmeg and cinnamon.

Many people are put off by squash because you must remove all skin and seeds before cooking. However, if you have a good peeler (an ordinary potato peeler is usually fine) and knife this won’t take more than a couple of minutes.

Some supermarkets will sell you a “here’s what I made earlier” squash, with the skin and seeds already removed. However, buying a prepared squash will probably have less of the healthy stuff so I prefer to prepare it myself. You also want it to come in at around a kilo, you want it firm, no green on the skin and it should sound hollow to the tap.

When storing squash the best place is a dark, cool cupboard in the kitchen. I prefer not to put it in the refrigerator because the wet atmosphere can cause it to rot. If you buy a few in a sale and want to keep them over a longer time there is nothing stopping you freezing squash. I recommend removing the skin and seeds first though, and perhaps chopping into cubes before sticking them in the freezer. You could always make a squash soup instead to freeze.

Picnic Dos and Don’ts

March 21st, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Food and Drink

Who says that being on a picnic means you can do whatever you want? Well, if it were that way, then it would be too scary to go on a picnic because anything can happen because there are no rules to follow. People can just walk up to your picnic spot and hijack your basket which can be very dangerous, too. I shudder to think what could happen. So before anything bad happens to your supposedly relaxing and stress-free picnic, there are some picnic etiquettes that you must adhere to in order to coexist with other picnic goers and with your surroundings as well.

There are picnic groves that have several picnic tables that strangers can share. Please don’t come up to somebody else’s picnic and feel too comfortable. You never know what these people are there for and they might not like it if someone gatecrashes to their picnic.

Another well-known thing that happens in a really fun picnic with much food on the table is the Food fight. It is very common in college cafeterias however it may possibly happen in picnics too since they tend to be by themselves. Don’t start, encourage or get associated in a food fight. Aside from all the trash that you will be leaving behind, you will probably be attracting a lot of bugs such as ants and bees that can harm you after they smell food on you.

Another thing to watch is your music volume. Don’t play your stereo too loud. You won’t just disturb other picnic goers, but you might irritate the animals around you. You don’t want a bear or other untamed animals to come over to your picnic just since they heard your loud music.

Talking about bears, do not feed the creatures, specifically bears. They could be cute and cuddly, but then again you do not know whenever they might immediately turn wild. For persons who bring their dogs along on a picnic, don’t let your dogs out without a leash simply because they might harm or destroy other people’s picnic and you will probably be held accountable for it.

Also, make sure you clean up your dog’s droppings and make sure to dispose it accordingly. That applies to all your trash also. Keep all your trash in a bag that you will be able to bring along with you to avoid a pile up of trash in the picnic site.

And on your way home, don’t drink alcoholic beverages knowing that you will be driving everyone home. Accidents happen anytime and just about everywhere so refrain from drinking alcohol in a picnic. There tend to be much of things that you need to avoid in order to make your picnic worry and hassle free. The list goes on and on. Various strokes for various folks. In the end, the success of your picnic will all depend on how well you behave like a responsible picnic-goer.

Eventually, there are several things you can do without limiting yourself from enjoying. Have fun, fun and more fun! Do bring a good camera to capture your precious moments, provide loads of healthy and great food for everyone to enjoy and have some more fun under the sun.

Poblano Peppers Information

March 21st, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Food and Drink

Poblano Peppers are found in the Mexican state of Puebla. This pepper is known to be mostly mild but some variations are considered rather hot. It is also unique because when it is dried, it is known as an ancho chile that moves from the fresh green of the Poblano and turns a blackish color.

When these peppers are meant to be used, they are meant to be peeled and to reduce its ‘hot’ qualities; the seeds and veins can be removed. To remove the skin, one can roast then and the skin will peel off, or they can be soaked in olive oil or dried in a pan to separate the skin. Poblano peppers when dried can be ground to be used a food flavoring.

The Poblano peppers plant is believed to grow up to 25 centimeters in height with the actual plant being about 6 inches long. As they grow, the outer skin color moves from green to a purplish green and finally to a dark purple that looks black. When it is meant to be stored for long periods, the outer skin will be peeled after the peppers have been roasted. It is at this point that they will be stored in airtight containers and this means that they now have a shelf life that runs for months.

Whether dried or roasted for storage, these Poblano peppers are used mostly for cooking. They can be cooked in stews and sauces as well as in dips like salsa. If one wishes to have a mildly hot chicken or turkey, then one can use these peppers as part of the stuffing.

Poblano peppers can be used to make guacamole, a creamed dip whose main ingredient is avocado. It can also be used to make salsa as well as be used as roasted strips that can be added to meat dishes. Stuffed peppers can be made with breadcrumbs, rice, condiments, cheese, eggs, and vegetables, which are first cooked and then stuffed into the poblano peppers, and these are baked for about 45 minutes. Soups can be given that mild kick with these peppers any time. One can use it in dried and powdered form as part of flavoring for various recipes.
