HGVC Timeshares Or Primo Vacations

August 4th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Holidays

Have you always wanted to purchase a Hilton Grand Vacation Club timeshare? Perhaps you’ve become aware of HGVC timeshares from friends who own one, or you’ve read about them in travel magazines. Maybe you’ve even sat through a three-hour presentation, aimed at selling you points in the Hilton Grand Vacation Club for $20,000 to $40,000. And of course, that’s only the beginning, as you need to bare in mind the yearly maintenance fees that usually total in the region of around $1,000.

There is certainly no question that HGVC timeshares are top-of-the-line, and they offer luxurious accommodations in many travel destinations. Unfortunately, many of their resorts are concentrated in Florida, Las Vegas, and Hawaii, with some others, mostly affiliates, scattered here and there. The system is easy to use, but availability is often limited, especially at the affiliate resorts.

Hilton also adds on a booking fee of $49 to reserve within its own system, and an RCI exchange fee of $189 per week. Hilton points can also, for a $69 fee, be converted to Honor Points, which can be used at Hilton Hotels. So there is a good degree of flexibility here, but bare in mind the many obvious as well as hidden costs.

However there is indeed another way to enjoy the luxury of Hilton resorts, and loads of other 4 and 5 star vacation destinations, without the exorbitant fees. It’s called Primo Vacations, a club developed by travel-experts, for travel-lovers! Primo Vacations gives you access to millions of vacation weeks at first-class resorts for as little as $100 per week. Stay in high demand tourist areas such as Spain, California, Mexico, and the French Riviera. You can easily make savings of up to 80% by using the Primo Hotel, Condo and Cruise Programs and pay absolutely NO timeshare maintenance fees of any kind!

Programs such as this often cost thousands of dollars, which is probably still more reasonable than all the charges associated with timeshares. But a Primo Vacations Club membership will cost a once only fee of only $697, and you’re on your way to a whole new world of amazing vacations! When you can benefit from all the advantages of a Primo Vacation Club membership, those HGVC timeshares don’t look like such great deals, after all!

Before you put all of your hard earned savings into hgvc timeshares, it might be worth taking a moment to look at the benefits of a vacations club. CLICK HERE to find out more about the travel discounts on offer to vacation club members

Motivating Students To Learn

August 1st, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Travel and Leisure

Everyday mud and rocks is what the things inside the bags and plastic vials would seem to someone not in the know. From the Larsen Ice Shelf in Antarctica came such specimens and the scientists will have their hands full with these. One mud sample, according to a college senior, can lead to a multitude of information. Funds were given by the National Science Foundation and so this college senior and other people selected from a university and college were able to explore Antarctica. Research travel is something usually engaged in by these schools.

The first part of the expedition aboard a research vessel was departing from Punta Arenas Chile in early February. It was on the east of the Antarctic Peninsula, the Larsen Ice Shelf, where they first stopped and it was an unfamiliar place. Absolutely no one ever reached their destination before. While the boat moved slowly, sonar was utilized to measure the depth of the ocean. Aside from gathering video footage, water and sediment samples were also gathered from the deck by students and researchers. Decades may pass before the samples are analyzed completely.

They will analyze the mud from its water content to its composition and from this they will be able to determine its association with global warming. This has been a rare opportunity for the students. Such a trip offers a face to face encounter with life, according to a student. A native of Scotland, she plans to study global warming in graduate school. Another student confirms that she wouldn’t mind being on a ship for the rest of her life, who will continue her studies next year at one university’s school of Oceanography.

For them, even the most severe weather conditions in the Southern Hemisphere can be managed. Compared to it was Upstate New York. They found it harder than cold days to have the sun rising and setting at 430 am and 930 pm. Some pain may be encountered from the brightness when you look out the window. Regardless of civilization being limited, everyday there was science. For the students, shifts ran from midnight to noon or the other way around. A group lounge was where students watched movies when they were not working, some slept on the bunk beds too.

Rules were still implemented in this case. Informing seniors of any serious activity is a must. If visiting an emperor penguin was not odd enough, a senior student even had to check out a new surface volcano. Such an encounter was enjoyable for this particular Dryden native. No one would forego such experiences. One of her best experiences here involved a trip to Vega Island. With only 10 other people ever setting foot on that place, she says it was extremely amazing.

Students who participated missed five weeks of classes. Due to environmental hazards associated with their vessel not to mention their busy schedules schoolwork was not attended to as much as it needed to be. The ship always being in motion did not make the situation easier. Nothing more than two emails a day to send back home was allowed. This journey brought together the students and faculty because of the close quarters and the lack of distractions. There was no escape as said by one student. Not only the desolate area but also the extreme environment will really make you close.

Not only were accompanying paperwork prepared for the customs officials but every kind of specimen they brought home to the United States was placed inside coolers. Other than five rolls of film one student also carried 323 digital pictures. For a student who was part of last year’s exploration, it was simply better to experience the surroundings. You have to live the experience. When it comes to your surroundings, you should be able to recognize things.

How Tourism Destroys Antarctica’s Environment

August 1st, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Travel and Leisure

Despite the isolation, high winds, snow, ice, raging seas in Antarctica, and for hardy types, precisely for such reasons, the continent will be visited by around 11,200 individuals this coming tourist season, all of them except for say 130, coming aboard a cruise liner. While that total is only about 400 more than the number of visitors last season mid November through February, it is 70 percent higher than the 6,585 previous seasons. Watchers of Antarctica are getting worried toward the environment of Antarctica and also forecast an annual flood of visitors rising up to the thousands.

Cruising to Antarctica entails twenty thousand dollars per person, plus a 14 day cruise that costs a hefty six to seven thousand dollars as sum but the passenger still needs to depart from Tierra del Fuego located in Ushuaia, Argentina, which is the origination point 90 percent of the travels to this continent so it can get really costly. Many environmental experts state that Antarctica is not invincible even with its tough climate and geography as well as the price of getting there as the tourists keep growing each year and this truly affects the land’s ecosystem.

The man behind the Antarctic Project notes that even as he wants all the world to see the Antarctic region’s breathtaking scenery, capping tourists coming in and limiting new sites explorations is a must. This Washington founded project works as the secretariat for over 200 environmental groups throughout forty different countries. It is just so sad that even if most who head to Antarctica come back swearing to abide by everything to ensure this continent’s conservation, the fact that there are just too many explorers coming into this fragile land and they are loving this in dangerous ways.

A concern greatly nagging this director is the great number of tourists heading to the exact same areas along the 800 mile Antarctic Peninsula, which is home to the most formidable concentration of penguins, seals and birds so he is keen on the six thousand voyager limit per year. But on one specific occasion at a time, it is extremely rare that visitors setting foot on land go beyond a hundred people. It is so bad that animals get disrupted when there are visitors for they cannot get food for themselves or for their young and they are also not able to rest.

But when it comes to a long term effect, not even science can answer that, she notes. Growing concerns would be tourists touching plants and not following good garbage disposal rules. With the many systems patterned after the Antarctic Treaty, staff make sure that when visitors arrive, they do not create much impact to their environment, and it is good that most tour operators strictly espouse and abide by these. The 1959 Antarctic Treaty supported by 43 different nations, along with the environmental protocol signed last January 14, 1998 pushed for the end of mining and oil drilling, and also implemented safety measures such as limiting fishing trips and cruises throughout White Continent to protect the environment.

Members that are part of the New York based association of tour operators have openly adopted the limit for shore visits which only accommodate a hundred people at a time and entail the use of motorized rubber boats known as zodiacs. Air craft with the flag of Russia would be flying, 9 out of the 15 this season. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, an opportunity for tour operators rose as several small sea vessels became available for them. An average of 40 to 80 people are welcome aboard these ships, several vessels along one that is know to be an ice breaker, all of them being able to plow through ice with hardened hulls. But for the meantime, there is persisting and growing concern toward the white continent’s state of environment. The ideal scenario would be us, looking back heaving a sigh of relief that all our worries went down the drain as there was nothing to be worried about in the first place. But let us all be responsible and keep ourselves from frequent Antarctic visits while science do not know the answers yet.

Antarctica?S Hiding Places Exposed

August 1st, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Travel and Leisure

International science is the main focus of human occupation of Antarctica, due to the unique position and status of the continent that makes it perfect for scientific study. One fantastic Antarctican characteristic tops almost the entire land mass and also goes into the surrounding water. It’s the great ice sheet. One example, the Ross Shelf Ice, is just as big as Texas. As the ice sheet moves, scientists have clocked it moving at a rate of 1800 feet per year.

Not only does Antarctica contain almost 2% of the total water on the planet, it contains an impressive 90% of the world’s ice. Sea level is governed mainly by the stability of that vast inland ice shelf. If most of the shelf were to melt to water, this would dramatically raise the sea level, to the point of being a disaster for the seacoast cities and all seaports.

Two hundred fifty feet would be added to the ocean?s levels if all that ice melted. Not only scientists understand the vast importance of maintaining the ice shelf. Knowing how fast the ice is moving is not that important. Providing geophysical history for over a million years is one aspect of the ice shelf.

Through the layers of ice, we can learn when nuclear explosions happened, as well as using lead in fuel and smelting lead. Common lead has been measured on the ice surface and tracked since the 1950′s. Lead alkyls have found their way into the ice. These are the result of the use of gasoline which includes lead and have been found to have increased exponentially. Now that we know this, we can learn just how serious our pollution troubles really are.

Interestingly enough, the polar snow and ice didn’t record any trace of DDT, but the penguins, seals and some fish in Antarctica did. Able to be dated as a result of their locations in the layers of ice, particles from outer space have been hitting earth as long as the enormous ice sheet was there. By tracing the particles, and seeing if there is some sort of pattern, scientists could extrapolate about the future of particulates from space and how they would interact with vehicles sent into space.

Because of the conditions, lichens make up the majority of the vegetation. The greatest quantity of land animals are springtails and mites. Flying insects cannot withstand the weather conditions in Antarctica, and the wingless fly is one of the largest land animals. The southernmost mammals, the Weddell seal as well as the flightless penguin, live in the encircling seas. To find food, the Weddell seal has been known to submerge itself for as long as 30 minutes and to depths of approximately 1,500 feet, which surprised researchers studying the creatures.

In the winter, Adelie penguins migrate north, but in the other months they hang around in the Antarctic. They have an uncanny ability to maintain a course heading exactly and precisely, due to their ability to use the sun to learn their location. Six Adelies traveled 2400 miles to their original rookery in an experiment. Three of the birds returned in ten months. They were taken to the South Pole where they were let free. Upon release, they quickly ascertained their situation then headed in a straight line for their homes.

Due to how productive this area is, it’s no surprise that the world’s largest creature frequents this place as well. The highly endangered blue whale is the largest animal ever recorded, and consumes a diet of a ton of shrimp on a daily basis. Lots more fish species live near Antarctica than in the Arctic Ocean. An amazing 90 percent of fish that live on the ocean’s bottom in the Antarctic can’t be found anywhere else on the planet.
