Five Tips To Makeover Your Room On A Budget

July 15th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Budgeting

The old home place is looking pretty boring, but who has the budget for a major redo these days? Even if there are only pennies in the piggy bank, certain time-honor design principles make it possible for anyone to create a home that’s beautiful, warm and welcoming, a genuine sanctuary from the stresses of contemporary life.

Designers give these guidelines as five of the best ideas to decor a home within the constraints of a limited budget. Even if you’ve heard these before, it’s good to get a refresher now and then.

1. Paint.

Yes, after all this time, a fresh coat of paint remains the favorite option of many an interior decorator. Paint retains its number-one spot on the decorating list because it’s simple and inexpensive, yet packs a wallop. Plus, if you decided you don’t like Mandarin Orange Spice on the walls, you can change it to Soothing Sage for a few dollars. Painting a room forms the basis for any makeover, and you can even make a party of it with family and friends.

2. Adding Light

You can make a big difference if you change the lighting in the room. First you need to determine how much natural light is entering your room. If you are lucky enough to have large windows then you don’t need to do very much work to get the natural lighting in the room. If your windows are small then you need to be creative. Small windows allow for a cozy cocoon feeling so to enhance that you can use soft textures that will give a warm cuddle feeling even more. Your window treatment will be the deciding factor in how much light comes into your room. Use a floor or table lamp and buy a newer bulb that will simulate natural light.

3. Pillows.

One of the easiest, most simple ways to liven up a room that’s getting stale is to change the pillows. Check out sewing and craft stores, along with thrift shops and secondhand stores, for fabric remnants and learn to make your own pillow covers. The simplest pillow covers are little more than envelopes that wrap around the pillow form and tie with a ribbon or button. Turn your imagination loose.

4. Add Area Rugs

Area rugs are so versatile when you want to update the look of your room. You can use area rugs to define a particular area in the room, bring in a new color or cover up a worn place in the carpet already down. If you purchase a well-made area rug that is older then the most recently made you will find that their design is unique and you may want to place them on the wall for decor.

5. Use your Imagination

No kidding. The top tool when it comes to interior decorating on a budget is your own creative imagination. The time and effort you invest in visualizing and planning a design, coupled with the ways you use finds in drapery, upholstery, furniture, lighting and accessories will be more than worth it. Experimenting with styles, materials and techniques will result in a home style that’s distinctively your own creation.

Beautifying Your New Home While Sticking To A Budget

July 9th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Budgeting

If you have bought a new home and are planning on moving in soon then read on. After spending your hard earned money on buying the perfect house, decorating it can be expensive especially when on a tight budget. Putting your own style and decor would be pleasing and less expensive rather than hiring a professional to design your house.

Decorating is about implementing your style and taste. By choosing things that you like, decorating becomes a breeze. Decorating as a family makes it even more enjoyable.

In decorating a new house, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the space. Without furnishings to block the areas, you’ll know better which furniture goes well in what room. Obviously, measurements are important. Before buying new furniture, make sure that you know the measurements of the space so you won’t be spending your money for nothing. If you want to use your old furniture however, then work your other decors around your piece. If no other decors fit in the room, then so be it. You can enhance the room in other creative ways, such as through lighting, wall hangings and color.

The living room is a major room in the house. Make sure that it looks welcoming and appealing. Curtains and area rugs add color; cushions and coverings meanwhile add design and texture. You can buy these items for less in discount stores.

Purchase quality beds for the bedrooms. Consider this an investment. Quality beds last longer and will save you the expenses of buying new ones soon. Choose the right size as bedrooms vary in floor area. Don’t set aside storage compartments, especially if you have a lot of things and there’s only a small closet. Invest in good cabinets or drawers for longer use.

Your children’s rooms will vary according to each child’s favorites. Common point however is to make these rooms – bedrooms and playroom – colorful, vibrant, comfortable and fun for your kids to hang out in. Needless to say, a safe room for your kids is essential. Have enough storage for the children’s toys.

Kitchen: Good storage cabinets along with a side table are required to store cooking utensils, plates, cups, etc. and also give you space to work on. Packaged food lying around can look messy so a cabinet especially for that is required.

The dining area: This could be a separate area or could be incorporated in the kitchen. The dining table is the place where the family sits together so it should be big enough to accommodate all members of the house and at the same time should look appealing to the eye. A pastel tablecloth with a bright rug below would keep it simple yet elegant. A fresh floral centerpiece personally arranged would give this place the finishing touch.

In all these rooms, displaying an area rug helps meeting the beauty standards easier. Even such spaces as the bathroom, porch and entryway will look better with an area rug as a floor covering. Selecting a rug that goes well with the motif or design of the room is a decorating success right before your eyes.

Decorating On A Budget

July 7th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Budgeting

With the declining economy, family households have had to tighten their belts and reduce their spending. Home decor is definitely one area of the budget that has been cut back. However, cutting back does not mean that all ideas of having a lovely abode are unrealistic. In fact, since many families are taking fewer vacations, it is more important that a home provides a haven or a retreat for daily stressors. Budget home decorating can be achieved by all.

You should try and make a lower budget because you don’t need to spend a bunch of money in order to make a room look nice. You should be more focused on whether you are creating a balance in the room and a nice feeling of harmony. Make sure that you get objects that will go together in what style you are hoping to create in the room. Don’t go with the usual, mix it up with some additions that are unique and show your personality.

Strategies can be employed that can use existing pieces in new approaches. Most people tend to place inexpensive items next to inexpensive items. However, it is advisable to generally group expensive items together. The reasoning is that inexpensive accents tend to cheapen expensive accessories. The tendency is to compare items which can be problematic when viewing inexpensive and expensive accents together. For example, a grouping of 3 to 4 African makes can be bought relatively cheaply at a flea market. They provide outstanding texture and color.

As we all know, rules can be broken. This applies to home decorating as well. Inexpensive items can be paired with expensive items if fashioned correctly. Firstly, expensive and inexpensive can co-exist if there are simple lines. Since simple lines naturally appear luxurious, all items will be elevated to that level. Another way is to invoke a spirit of funkiness. The “gypsy” look is to combine a great piece of modern furniture with an antique vase. The contrast is stunning!

You need to simply be careful when you shop for your new decor. Don’t go to those expensive shops; look for the sales and closeouts. Go to a discount store, flea market, estate sales are another great place to look. With all these places to look you can find some really great bargains. You need to just have an idea of what colors you are looking for and what style you are wanting to change your decor too. Don’t buy an item if you’re not going to use it in your home that is just a waste of money.

Another excellent way to save money when redecorating is to get some area rugs. These rugs will add a nice splash of color to a duller room or just add a nice warm touch to one that you have already made up. Texture is another thing that the area rug can bring into the room. Try buying different styles of rugs like bamboo, synthetic, or jute. The feeling it brings to the room can create a nice addition to the room.

You should also make sure that you get a shape of an area rug that goes with the look in the room. Of course the size is extremely important you don’t want a rug that is too large for a room or one that is too small. Make sure you pick the correct shape and size to add to the decor.

It’s easy to understand why in today’s economy you are not looking to spend a bunch of money on a redecorating project. But with some wise shopping and some good thinking you can have a brand new look.

Budget interior design has never been this easy; be sure to take a look at this bedroom decorating ideas for the latest tips.

June 20th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Budgeting

A small budget is no hindrance to redecorating. Your home can still take on a new look even with small money to spare. Here are ideas to help you:

Thrift stores are heaven sent for those looking for amazing goods but with no money to spare. There are also the yard sales, flea markets, auctions and discount outlets. From the smallest home decorative item to the heaviest of furniture, you’ll all find them here. In addition, trinkets and other accessories are aplenty.

Dollar stores sell items which the major retail stores have discontinued and stock any items they can source. Therefore you can find brand name items which normally would be out of your price range, much cheaper than usual. For example, say you wanted to buy a wallpaper border or brass picture frame, but can’t afford home improvement store prices. It could well be worth your while looking in a dollar store.

Shop from your own home! Yes, going over your things can just give you some surprise. You might have stored things that if you didn’t have any use of before, can now prove to be functional. You can also make new accessories from old materials you have. Be creative and you’ll reap great rewards.

If you’re quite an artist, why not make your own decorations? You don’t have to spend for artworks. A collage of photos is a personal item that is also an interesting piece of decor. Frames can look more artistic with ornaments or little painted artworks. There are cheap materials in bookstores or supplies stores that you can buy in bulk.

Make your own fabric. From old clothes or other used materials, you can have pillow covers, drapes and even wall hangings. Choose fabrics with a nice color or design.

Lastly, area rugs are perfect decorations for those on a budget. Rugs may look sophisticated and all, but not all rugs are pricey. There are area rugs with very budget-friendly prices. You don’t have to worry about breaking your budget. Even better, rugs that are cheaper are as nice-looking as the other pricey decorations. Rugs are worth their money despite very little of it.

Cheaper Decorating

June 20th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Budgeting

Redecorating is a job that many people love to do, but at times it can get a bit expensive. But there are ways in which you can decorate a room and not spend that much money. What it takes is a lot of hard work on your part, and a lot of creativity and imagination. You can change the look and feel of rooms rather quickly with only a few changes. Maybe you want a room that is more art deco, you can accomplish this very easily by using colors that are both dark and bright and alternate them around the room. This way you may be able to keep the old furniture and save money.

Modern decor is all about a minimal look. A room that you want to place the modern look in doesn’t need to have tons of things in it. You need plain things that can look good, but not have too many accessories. Something that is very geometric in style. Accomplish this in the bedroom by making a new headboard. You can use Styrofoam and cut out shapes like triangles and stars, than clue them to the headboard. Don’t forget to paint them before you place them up though. You can also add a nice fabric to the headboard that is modern looking.

There are other ways that you can use things like sheets or blankets that you never use. Buy some dye and make sure it’s a color that will go in the room you are redecorating. Now dye these pieces of linen that you are using. You can now sew them into slip covers for furniture, curtains, or even throw pillows. You have saved a tremendous amount of money on these items but still changed the look of a room.

There are other ways you can change things, painting a picture frame will change the look of it completely or changing up the pictures that are on your wall. But the two easiest ways that you can change the look of a room are through throw pillows and area rugs. If you already have made your own throw pillows lets’ move on to the area rug. You can even recycle your old ones for the next step.

Get those old area rugs together, and if they still match the color that is in your new room, you can change the look of them quickly and easily. Get a cool looking stamp, something that is geometric in design if you’re still sticking with the modern look. Put some paint on the stamp and then put it on the area rug. Now you have created a new area rug that will fit in great with the new look of your room. And again you haven’t spent a lot of money.

Area rugs can be redecorated in much the same way. If you have an area rug that already matches your color scheme use paint to stamp geometrical designs onto the rug. If you do not have an area rug that will match you can cheaply purchase a solid color area rug and add color in the same way. Try using the shapes that you will use for your head board to do the stamping. This will ensure that you have a perfect match and save time, because by the time you finish most of your shapes will be thoroughly painted!

These easy projects will give you a fabulous new look for under $50. At that price you really can afford to indulge yourself.

Home Decorating On A Budget

June 11th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Home Improvement

Even in the best of times, the home decorating budget has to come at the bottom of a long list of bills, needs, wants, and responsibilities that tug at you each month. That’s why it is so important to stretch your dollars as far as you can when trying to decorate your home. The following tips should help you to make your home look fabulous, without breaking the bank.

First of all, used items are your best friends. Just because someone is done with an object doesn’t mean that it doesn’t still look good, or even new. Many times people throw away, sell, or donate objects that they have grown tired of, but which still look new and beautiful.

You should try and visit yard sales as often as possible. If you travel through residential neighborhoods on most weekends in the late spring, summer, and early fall, you should be able to find at least a few places where you can pick up inexpensive home decor. A good tip is to go early on Saturday morning for better selection, or to go late in the day Sunday afternoon for a better price, and more haggling power. At the end of a yard sale many people are willing to practically give stuff away just so they don’t have to haul it back inside.

Multi family yard sales are especially advantageous, because you will have a wider selection, and you can compare prices on similar items. You also have a little more clout when haggling because you can always walk away and visit the next booth.

If its not yard sale time, you can always visit consignment shops and salvation army stores. Thrift stores are also another good venue for picking up inexpensive decorative items.

The thing about most home decor is that its visual, it doesn’t actually get used, so it doesn’t degrade as quickly as other items might. Mirrors, art, clocks, as long as some care is taken, these can all last for generations, depending on the quality of the work. So visiting second hand locations looking for home decor is even easier than searching out clothing, or other functional items.

If you prefer buying new, then the internet should be your constant companion. An iPhone or other internet enabled device can help when going from store to store. You can just hop online and check the major e-tailers for price comparisons. If you don’t have a fancy device in your pocket then a pad of paper and a pen is almost as effective. Write down the name and price of anything that catches your eye. Then go online and see if you can find a coupon, or can find it on sale.

Creating an enticing and attractive atmosphere in the home shouldn’t have to break the bank. There are a wide variety of options for searching out quality, low priced goods that can add unique style and flair to the space. You just have to be willing to keep your eyes open, and actively seek out the deals.
