Catholic Wedding Traditions

August 3rd, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Marriage Wedding

There are many important traditions in various cultures and religions when it comes to the sacred bond of marriage. Whatever your religion is, you’ll want to honor the traditions carefully as you enter into this life-changing pledge.

The wedding day is a beautiful and wonderful occasion that will be cherished by friends and family members alike. Catholic wedding traditions are important to Catholic couples and have been carried out for centuries.

The wedding ceremony begins with the processional. This is the part of the Catholic wedding during which the wedding party ascends to the alter. Usually the minister proceeds first, followed by the groom and his parents, then the bridesmaids and groomsmen, and finally the bride would be escorted down the aisle by her father. The Catholic tradition is that the priest will start the ceremony by greeting the couple and delivering an opening prayer. A passage from the Old Testament continues the ceremony.

The next part of the traditional ceremony has the Priest reading from the New Testament in honor of the bride and groom. The exchange of vows and rings comes next in the traditional Catholic wedding. Usually the priest reads the vows and the couple responds. The rings are then exchanged immediately following the vows. The traditional kiss comes next, as the priest will ask the bride and groom to kiss following the exchange of rings. The priest will recite another prayer to finish the ceremony.

The Catholic wedding continues as the priest gives communion and guest recite “The Lord’s Prayer”. The ceremony ends with the priest ends mass with a blessing and the wedding party exits, starting with the bride and groom.

These traditions are important to couples that wish to honor their religion. Once the ceremony is over, it’s time to move on to the reception and the celebration of your new life together.
