Flight School Training – Getting Your Private Pilot License

When you first make the decision that you are going to become a pilot it is a most exciting moment. The adrenaline flows and the thought of becoming a pilot and holding the title as one is quite impressive.

When you are looking at how much time it’s going to take to complete this then you are looking at 45 hours of flying a plane. This doesn?t seem like much, but it does take some time to complete. 25 of those hours will be with an instructor then the valets will be where you are flying on your own during this time of flying on your own 5 of those hours will have to be where you will go across country.

This is part of the flight that qualifies you for your license. It will have to cover a distance of 270 kms you will also have to make some point landings along the way will be pre arranged. So out of all of this when you add it up this will be about 35 hours worth and the last ten are going to be used in a combination of addressing your weaknesses and where you need to spend more time.

Your safety and the safety of others will be the number one priority during the entire time of your training and actually from that point on. When you first start to fly and the first little while that you are taking the plane up in the air you will remain within your area. You will become quite familiar with the take off and the landings. After you have done this the first time by yourself then you will have to continue on to learn other navigation points Every school has their own method of teaching, but they must all follow the FAA regulations.

When you look at all the responsibility that goes with getting a pilots license its quite interesting to note that you only have to be at the age of 17 to be able to do this. Some individuals even start the training at the age of 14, and although they cannot fly at this age they can accumulate their hours that they have put into their learning.

To actually fly a solo while in training one has to be 16 years of age. It is also to be remembered that a medical passing certificate must be obtained if this is for a private pilots license.

Everybody enjoys the practical part of their learning. However, theory is just as important and like any training program, there will be several exams that will be involved. All the written exams will have to be done within a one year period and there is about 7 of them that need to be done after that you have another 2 years.

Are You Apprehensive About Getting Your Private Pilot License?

The one thing holding lots of people back from obtaining their private pilot license is fear.

We all possess fears. Some people will not even admit to them, but we have them. Embarking on anything new, while being fantastically exciting, will also be very frightening. And fear of failure is usually the top thing on our list.

If you have taken a driver’s test and did not pass the very first time, you surely recall what that was like when the teacher turned to you and said, “Sorry, you failed.” There was a hollow feeling within your stomach. Your head and posture were bent down. And you felt that way until you finally passed the test.

Nobody likes to fail, and fear of failure is one of the most horrible fears in the world.

Now that awe realize how bad the fear of failure is, let’s take a look at methods to deal with it.

Because as awful as this fear is, there are ways to beat it.

1. Take into consideration the chance you’re missing

Suppose that you decide that you are too anxious to go through with learning how to fly and taking your exam. Now consider your life if you cannot do the one thing that you sincerely love. Look, if you want to learn to fly, surely there’s probably a pretty good reason. If you can remain focused on the reason why, you’ll find your fears gradually fading away into the background.

2. Consider What Happens If You Don’t Learn

If you don’t have your PPL, then what. Well for starters you’ll become a frequent flyer on commercial airlines. You won’t be able to go where you want to go WHEN you would like to go there. You’ll be at the mercy of others. Of course you’ll have other choices also. You can drive, ride a train or take a bus. If that idea makes you ill to your stomach, concentrate on it. See how fast you get over your fear of failure then.

3. Consider The Worst Case Scenario

Think about what transpires in the event you fail the PPL examination. What is the most awful thing that will happen? They cannot tell you that you can’t take it all over again. You can simply take the examination for a second time. This is not a one chance deal. Think of how many people wouldn’t be driving cars if that were the case. There are undoubtedly things substantially worse than not passing the examination. At worst, you need to wait a little longer to get your private pilot license.

4. There Are Advantages To Failing

Failure is always an incredible learning opportunity. We can improve on things after we know what we did incorrect. Failure certainly beats getting into the cockpit of your plane before you’re ready. The consequences of that can obviously be fatal.

5. Have Your Contingency Plan Ready

If you do fail, have a plan. You should already be planning ahead of time on taking additional lessons, getting additional flight time and rescheduling. Failing doesn’t suggest that you quit.

6. Take Action. Do Something Now

Jumping in and taking action can help you overcome your fear quicker than anything else. The more you delay, the more afraid you’re going to become until you reach a point where you are unable to take your exam at all.

7. The Ancient Greeks Burned Their Boats

You will have to progress ahead if you can’t turn back. Ancient Greeks were said to accomplish this by burning their boats. There was no option to go back. I do not know what you need to do so that you can burn YOUR boat but do it. If that means picking up the telephone and scheduling your examination, do it. Don’t look back.

Divers In Egyptian Red Sea

Ned Middleton describes how he and a team of Divers from Diving World discovered a wreck in the Egyptian Red Sea.

Saturday 19 December 1998 was a beautiful day and very soon, this small group of Divers – all brought together by chance, set off on a one-week excursion in luxurious style. Within an hour or so we were Diving some of those excellent Reefs that combine to make the entire Red Sea an underwater Marine Park of such unique diversity of flora and fauna that it will always stand as one of the Underwater Wonders of the World. Names like Umm Grammar and Gota Eida Reef were soon tripping off the tongue as we each returned to our floating base excited by what we had just encountered.

Then, with the most successful indoctrination into the delights of the Red Sea behind us, it was time to contemplate tomorrow when we would be visiting the Ghiannis D and the Thistlegorm. I had become partnered with Shane Brown – a Physical Training Instructor from Nottingham. Shane proved to be a great companion and it was a pleasure to watch him rapidly developing into a very good Diver indeed. He also began to insist (and I tell the truth!) on carrying my spare camera – and many a good Diver has been well paid for much less.

The Ghiannis D was a great Dive. The stern section is particularly dramatic – reaching almost to the surface. The wreck, however, lies in two completely separate sections and the Bows are often overlooked – though, personally, I found these to be the best.

Then, for me at least, it was a very long-overdue visit to the famous Thistlegorm and, I have to say that, as I entered the water, I was wondering whether or not any vessel could live up to the hype – both good and bad, which surrounds this particular ship. As we approached the site, it was midday and Ali Baba was first in the water to secure the mooring line. He takes great pride in his work and secured the Miss Nouran to the Thistlegorm’s anchor chains at the bows.

Ironically, the Thistlegorm suffers greatly from those Diving Boats which moor to the shallower reaches of the wreck – such as the Bridge, with some tying to each other. With the larger Boats weighing in at something like 20 tons, it is easy to see how the combined force of these Boats is able to exert pressures for which no big ship’s superstructure was ever designed as the long rolling waves continually test their lines. The effect is catastrophic and large sections of the Thistlegorm’s Bridge are now found on the seabed on the starboard side, whereas another, even larger section, was seen hanging down and swaying precariously over the port side – all pulled off by the Diving Boats who are dependent on this ship for their very livelihood.

Looking back, I must confess that – before I got into the water, I had wondered why Ali Baba had taken that little extra time to take our line down as far as the anchor chains. Rather obvious when you think about it, he was using one of the Thistlegorm’s strong points – but then he cares.

Nevertheless, the Thistlegorm is still an incredible experience and we soon found those WW2 vehicles and motorcycles – exactly as depicted in the many accounts I have read of this truly amazing shipwreck. Even now, the vehicles look as though they are still waiting to be unloaded. With the powerful lights from my twin strobes illuminating this fantastic scene, it was also all too obvious why so many “downbeat” articles persist about this single shipwreck. The motorcycles are now all pushed over as Divers have searched for something to take home. The badges, pedals, twist grips and tool kits are all long gone. As for the other vehicles, only a few steering wheels are left – but, worst of all, in order to get at those steering wheels, or another souvenir from the engine, Divers have forced their way in through the roof or the bonnet of each vehicle – thus maximising the damage caused in search of a trophy – only to throw it away a few months later… I rest my case.

For the rest of Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning, we enjoyed the extensive delights of a vessel that produces a curious conflict within any caring Diver – and even then we had not seen it all. The Thistlegorm is still the most outstanding accessible shipwreck in the world and will remain “The World’s Foremost Diving Attraction” for some years to come. Sadly, however, the rate of decline is far worse than I had ever imagined and if not halted – like now!, she will soon become a distant memory – perhaps then, the World of Diving will allow this particular War Grave to rest in Peace… Monday night found us anchored at Bluff Point where, right below our stern was the smallest remnant of a shipwreck – in only 12m of water. A sheltered spot, a well lit Boat and a small wreck are the ideal ingredients for a good night dive – and this proved to be a veritable haven for fish life with the biggest delight being provided by a pair of very large Moray Eels.
