Ecotourism is a relatively new concept in the world of travel. It has only been around since the 1980s (30 years isn’t very long in terms of modern history). It essentially deals with the practice of protecting and encouraging all of the good things about modern travel (history, culture, economy, social integration) while attempting to reduce or remove all of the bad things (pollution, destruction of land and culture, unfair employment issues, etc.) Here are some working definitions:

Ecotourism is responsible travel to fragile, pristine, and usually protected areas that strives to be low impact and small scale. It is designed to educate the traveler; provide funds for conservation; directly benefit the economic development and political empowerment of local communities; and foster respect for different cultures and for human rights. Eco tourism is held as important by those who participate in it so that future generations may experience aspects of the environment relatively untouched by human intervention.

Ecotourism is responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.

Ecotourism may appeal to ecologically and socially conscious individuals. Generally it focuses on volunteering, personal growth and environmental responsibility. Ecotourism typically involves travel to destinations where flora, fauna and cultural heritage are the primary attractions. One of the goals of ecotourism is to offer tourists insight into the impact of human beings on the environment, and to foster a greater appreciation of our natural habitats.

Responsible ecotourism includes programs that minimize the negative aspects of conventional tourism on the environment and enhance the cultural integrity of local people. Therefore, in addition to evaluating environmental and cultural factors, an integral part of ecotourism is the promotion of recycling, energy efficiency, water conservation, and creation of economic opportunities for local communities.

Ecotourism, responsible tourism, jungle tourism and sustainable development have become prevalent concepts since the late 1980s, and ecotourism has experienced arguably the fastest growth of all sub-sectors in the tourism industry. The popularity represents a change in tourist perceptions, increased environmental awareness, and a desire to explore natural environments. At times, such changes become as much a statement affirming one’s social identity, educational sophistication and disposable income as it has about preserving the Amazon rainforest or the Caribbean reef for posterity.

Ecotourism is about uniting conservation, communities and sustainable travel. This means that those who implement and participate in ecotourism activities should follow the following ecotourism principles:

Minimize impact.

Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.

Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.

Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.

Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people.

Raise sensitivity to host countries’ political, environmental and social climate.

While this general ideology sounds wonderful, how does it apply to the general state of travel and how will it affect the world at large?

As the largest business sector in the world economy, the Travel & Tourism industry is responsible for over 230 million jobs and over 10% of the gross domestic product worldwide.

In 2006, Travel & Tourism (consumption, investment, government spending and exports) is expected to grow 4.6% and total US$6.5 trillion.

Tourism is a principle “export” (foreign exchange earner) for 83% of developing countries, and the leading export for 1/3 of poorest countries.

For the world’s 40 poorest countries, tourism is the second most important source of foreign exchange, after oil.

So now it becomes clear just how important this relatively new concept is. Socially conscious economics are progressive and altruistic in design. Widespread adoption of ecotourism’s tenets will undoubtedly prove successful in reducing harm while maximizing local benefit. While in its current form, ecotourism may resemble something of a hippie retreat; it is an increasingly important model for the responsible economic and social growth of developing countries. Tourism is a healthy and stable source of income across the globe. Promoting the education of healthy and positive relations with the host environments will improve the lives of the locals while preserving the natural surroundings for future generations. When the lives of the poorest in this world are made better by those with clear hearts and minds, the species as a whole has won a significant victory.

How To Choose Your Caribbean Destination

The Caribbean is a region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands and the surrounding coasts. It is located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico, east of Central America and north of South America. Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs and cays. These islands are called the West Indies as Columbus believed he had reached the Indies (in Asia) when he landed there in 1492. The region includes the Antilles, divided into the Greater and Lesser Antilles, the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. The region takes its name from the Carib, an ethnic group present at the time of European contact.

Since there are more than 7,000 islands in the region, narrowing down which location is best for you may require some forethought. While each of the major tourist sites offers similar amenities, such as hotels, beaches, restaurants and evening entertainments, some of the locations in the Caribbean offer a little bit more. Here are some of the top destinations:

Punta Can

Punta Cana, on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, is what Caribbean postcards are made of: twenty-five miles of white sand, swaying coconut trees and more than 35 resorts (which by law cannot be taller than a palm tree). European tourists long ago discovered Punta Cana and Americans are now catching on. At this affordable tropical getaway, most guests choose to stay in all-inclusive resorts. The town itself isn’t a tourist draw; the primary purpose of Punta Cana is relaxation by the sea.

Negril

Hedonistic Negril beats to a reggae pulse. Major tourist areas are Seven Mile Beach, home to adult-oriented resorts, and the West End, with smaller, more laid-back accommodations and beaches, shops and restaurants within walking distance. Get a cool drink and watch the sunset from Rick’s Bar. Gaze at dramatic Negril Cliffs, which provided backdrops to James Bond’s “Thunderball.” If your hotel doesn’t offer a shuttle, take minibuses. Or set a different pace and trot off on a horseback tour.

Montego Bay

Low-key and relaxed, Mo-Bay (as the locals call it) is warm year-round. Swim and snorkel in clear water at Doctor’s Cave and Fletcher Beach, dive in the ominously named Widowmaker’s Cave, golf on courses such as Half Moon and Tryall. Off the beaten path, feed a hummingbird at the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary and tour Rose Hall Great House, a former sugar plantation with a spooky past. After dark, feast on jerk chicken, dance to a reggae beat and gamble on Gloucester Avenue, a.k.a. the Hip Strip.

Puerto Plata

When visiting this Dominican Republic town, most will actually stay in one of the all-inclusive resorts in nearby Playa Dorada. The usual water sports are available in Puerto Plata, although the beaches are better at Dorada. Travelers will enjoy the Amber Museum, the 16th-century San Felipe Fortress, the cable car to the peak of Mount Isabel de Torres and the fresh produce and handicrafts at a market geared more for locals than tourists. Be aware that winter brings rain, so plan accordingly.

Palm/Eagle Beach

Inhabited since the year 1000, Aruba is an island rich in history and culture. Eagle Beach is an idyllic Caribbean beach, with white sands and turquoise waters, and is frequented by water sports enthusiasts. Palm Beach, on the island’s west side, offers perfect swimming conditions and powdery sand. Those more concerned with conditions under the waves won’t want to miss the wreck of the torpedoed tanker Pedernales, a popular diving site. Aruba is only 20 miles long, thus easily explored by bike or moped.

Bermuda is great for its restaurants and pubs, sophisticated resorts, and convenience. Jamaica is the place to go if you’re looking for an all-inclusive, couples-only resort. And St. Lucia’s dramatic cliffside resorts, unique dining options, and dramatic geography make it an idyllic couples’ paradise, reminiscent of the South Pacific.

It’s hard to beat the Bahamas for a family Caribbean vacation: the Atlantis on Paradise Island and Our Lucaya on Grand Bahama Island are two of the most complete resorts in the region. Aruba also is an excellent family destination, with its friendly population and many options for off-resort activities. Families looking to go off the beaten path should consider St. Kitts and Nevis, which has old forts, haunted plantations, and a vintage railroad to explore.

Families love Palm Beach in Aruba for its gentle surf and wide array of water sports. Barbados is famed for the exquisite stretches of sand along its Gold Coast, home to fabulous luxury resorts like Sandy Lane. If you’re looking for solitude, check out the Grenadines, where you can still find a secluded beach to call your own for a day.

The Caribbean may be best known for its diving: top destinations include Bonaire, Virgin Gorda, Grand Cayman, Turks and Caicos, and St. Croix; snorkelers prefer Antigua, St. Croix, and St. John. The trade winds that caress Aruba and Curacao make these islands ideal destinations for windsurfers; sailors tend to set course for the Grenadines or the British Virgin Islands.

The best known casino in the Caribbean — and the most “Vegas-like” — is the Atlantis on Paradise Island, which is also the largest hotel in the Caribbean. Puerto Rico has long been a gambler’s mecca; the Wyndham El San Juan is perhaps the best-known casino, the Wyndham Rio Mar one of the newest and nicest. The Dominican Republic has the most casinos in the Caribbean, but I prefer the laid-back atmosphere of Aruba, which has a nice concentration of upscale hotel/casinos on Palm Beach.

With so many destinations to choose from, it is a safe bet that you will be able to find exactly what you’re looking for, as long as you know what that is!

Things To Do While At Dreamworld Gold Coast

Dreamworld is situated on the Gold Coast in Australia’s tropical state, Queensland. The coastal strip is one of Australia’s premier holiday destinations for both domestic and international tourists as it combines stunning beaches and natural beauty with loads of attractions and fun. When you have warmed up with those rides, it is time for the heavy duty scream inducers: the Tower of Terror and The Giant Drop. The Tower of Terror slides you along a track at high speed and up a perpendicular track to high above the park. You then return backwards at high speed. The ride is over very quickly, but the memory of the velocity will remain in your leaping heart and stomach.

Right beside the Tower of Terror is the Giant Drop. This scary ride lifts you high up above the park and you can see over the Gold Coast and then when the tension is sufficiently built, you drop stories at high velocity. The exciting ride is certainly not for the fainthearted.

There are plenty of family rides too, for people that are not after so much adrenaline and speed. One of the rides that is great fun for everyone in the family is the Thunder River Rapids Ride. With this you and your friends or family float down the rapids. It is gentle, but a lot of fun and includes a couple of splashes along the way. For the little ones there is Wiggles World and Nickelodeon World too.

A day out at Dreamworld Gold Coast is a load of fun for everyone in the family. There is plenty to do and see and if you don’t get around to doing everything that you want to do, then you can purchase a return ticket for the next day at a super low price as you leave the park in the afternoon.

5 Things You Must Do When Heading To The Big Island

The Island of Hawaii, also called the Big Island or Hawaii Island (to reduce confusion with the state of Hawaii) is a volcanic island in the North Pacific Ocean. It is larger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined and is the largest island in the US and is still growing! Hawaii is said to have been named for Hawaiʻiloa, the legendary Polynesian navigator who first discovered it. Other accounts attribute the name to the legendary realm of Hawaiki, a place from which the Polynesians originated, the place where they go in the afterlife, the realm of the gods and goddesses.

As with all the islands in the state of Hawaii, the Big Island is a tourist hotspot because of its natural beauty, tropical climate and beautiful waters and waves. As the largest of all the islands it has some of the most modern tourist facilities and services in the state. Modernization has not affected its natural beauty; however, as even on the Big Island it is easy to get lost in the tropical surroundings. As many people consider visiting Hawaii for the first time, they may wonder where to start. Here are several suggestions:

1. Sunbathing and Swimming – Naturally, the tropical island offers the best in relaxing on the beach or swimming in the azure waters. A Hawaiian vacation is the definition of going to the beach. Although the Big Island is relatively new (1000 years old) it offers several glorious beaches. Anaeho’omalu Beach is white and has very little surf with good swimming and snorkeling. Hapuna Beach is a “classic hawaiian beach” and is great for everything sun-related — it also has covered pavilions, restrooms, grassy areas, and palm trees. Kauna’oa Beach has been voted “The best beach in the world” twice by Conde-Nash Traveller, but get there by 9:00am as access is limited to 30 passes at a time. Punalu’u Black Sand Beach is unique because of its black sand and it is a popular nesting ground for large sea turtles. Make sure you visit at least one of these beaches during your stay.

2. Whale Watching – Whale watching is an extremely popular activity in Hawaii. People want to see nature, and the whale is a significant symbol of the marine life experience. Scientists estimate that two-thirds of the humpback whale population (in the North Pacific) visits the Islands each winter. Hawaii’s whale watching season takes place from late November to mid-April. There are numerous whale watching excursions throughout the state, many of which guarantee sightings and provide expert narration to heighten the experience. You’ll want to bring your camera and lots of film and have your camera ready; you never know when or where a humpback might show.

3. Helicopter Tours – The helicopter tours on the Big Island are extremely safe, professional and reasonably priced. For a little bit less than the cost of a luxury suite, you can tour the island from above. The breath may catch as the scenery unfolds below these state-of-the-art vertical air machines. Experience the sensation of flying above the tropical canopy and witnessing the beauty of the waterfalls, wildlife and wide blue sky. Watch as the endless lava flow bubbles into the ocean and creates acres of new landmass. The Hawaiian helicopter tour is an activity unique to this location and is considered a life-changing event by many who experience it.

4. The Hawaiian Luau – A luau is a Hawaiian feast. It may feature local foods such as poi, kalua pig, poke, lomi salmon, opihi, haupia, and beer. Bonfires, Hawaiian music and hula dancing are traditional entertainments. In Hawaii, “luau” and “party” are often the same, resulting in graduation, wedding and birthday luaus. This means there are plenty of events to choose from. An evening of culture and celebration, Hawaiian-style, is a fine addition to your holiday itinerary.

5. The Lomilomi Massage – The Lomilomi, meaning “massage” in the Hawaiian language, is the word used today to describe Hawaiian massage. Traditionally called lomi meaning “to rub, press, squeeze, massage; to work in and out, as the claws of a contented cat”. Lomilomi is a holistic healing tradition beyond simple massage. Lomilomi practitioners use the palms, forearms, fingers, knuckles, elbows, knees, feet, even sticks and stones. Traditionally in ancient Hawaii lomilomi was practiced in four contexts: As a healing practice, as a luxury and an aid to digestion, as restorative massage within the family and by ʻōlohe lua (masters of the Hawaiian martial arts). As it has a deep history and holistic approach, this unique is form of relaxation unique to the region.
