Having the right drills allows you to do that. For example, you can incorporate drills that teach a fundamental of the game and at the same time provides conditioning for the players. This can make conditioning more fun and you are getting more done in less time.

Developing your players potential is your main job as coach. Your goal is to have your players instinctively know what to do. In order to do this you have to have drills that build the right habits in a given situation. When players instinctively know how to react or move based on the situation, they will have more confidence and belief in their ability. Of course you don’t want to run the same drill over and over again. You want to have a wide range of drills that teach the same thing so it stays fun for your players.

Lastly, you want to have practice simulate game situations so your team is prepared for each game. The way you organize practice has everything to do with play in the game. As Vince Lombardi said, “Perfect practice makes perfect.” So don’t have your players just play “pick-up” games or just run around the court with no aim or goal in mind.
