Black Coffee Has Been Penned In The 1930s As A Theater Production

Agatha Christie Black Coffee with Hercule Poirot is a novel based on a theater production. Christie was a very successful mystery writer of a time long ago. It was her first stage play. Charles Osborne, the author of “The Life and Crimes of Agatha Christie”, has produced a Hercule Poirot plot in the form of a book. It is almost as if he wrote it in the persona of Christie herself.

It begins with a scientist trying to figure out where his secret formula is. He had locked it in a safe. Now it’s gone. This formula was created to assist in the British war effort. He has called Hercule Poirot to come to his country estate and help him find it. But, he does not survive to greet him.

Right from the start it is obvious that this book originated as a stage play. It is not as involved as the mysteries written today. All along, it seems as if the murderer is easy to identify. Osborne wrote this in the same classic mystery genre used by Christie all those years ago.

The scene is set at the country estate of Sir Claud who thought a family member was out to steal his secret formula. The formula was kept in a safe and scheduled to be turned over to the Ministry for Defence as part of the war effort. It went missing from the safe. All had gathered in the library at Sir Claud’s request.

It was Sir Claud’s intent to keep everyone in the library with him. He directed the butler to lock them all in. He sat sipping his coffee as they waited for the detective to arrive. He repeated many times that his coffee tasted bitter.

In one dramatic moment, the room went black. When the lights came on a few minutes later, Sir Claud was no longer alive. Shockingly, the secret formula had been returned.

Hercule arrived and was needed to solve a murder instead of the mystery of a missing secret formula. Agatha Christie fans will love this book. It is a great mystery romp. The fact that violence (except for the murder of course) and swearing are absent from the book makes it even more appealing.
