Background of the Rugby Six Nations Cup
For 10 years now six European national rugby union teams have been competing in the Rugby Six Nations Cup Event. Before 2000 the event was known as the Five Nations Championship as only five teams were competing in it. The event occurs every year and today the teams involved are England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy.
Every team involved must have 15 players on the pitch (field) throughout the game which comprises of two parts which last 40 minutes each. Should any player however do something that is not deemed to be in the games spirit or may cause injury to another player then the referee has the option to send them off the pitch to the sin bin for 10 minutes.
The Rugby Six Nations Cup Event this year commences on Saturday 6th February. The teams involved will be required to play the others during the next 9 weeks with the final matches happening on Saturday 20th March. The team that is awarded the most points is declared the winner. For every game a team wins they will be awarded 2 points, whereas should the game played be declared a draw then each team is awarded 1 point. However, for a team that does not win a game unfortunately no points will be awarded to them.
The teams competing will play each other team either at their home ground or away at their competitors. For England home matches these take place at Twickenham. Whilst for the other teams Ireland will play theirs at Croke Park, Dublin, Scotland at Murrayfield, Edinburgh, Wales at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. As for France their games take place at the Stade de France, Paris and Italy’s take place at the Stadio Flaminio, Rome.
But as well as these six countries competing to win the Six Nations Cup there are a number of other trophies that teams will be competing for as well. There is the Triple Crown that England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland are looking to win. There is the Calcutta Cup that England or Scotland contest for. Plus Scotland also competes with Ireland to win the Centenary Quaich. Other trophies which are also contested for are the Millennium Trophy that Ireland or England would like to win since 1988. Plus when it comes to Italy and France since 2007 these two teams have contested the winning of the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy.
Yes all teams would like to be the winners of the Six Nations Cup but there is another trophy that England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales would like to win as well. These teams are looking to be presented with the Triple Crown. Yet although the Triple Crown has been hotly contested by these teams for many years a trophy was first presented in 2006. When the first Triple Crown trophy was presented it was Ireland who received it and they are the ones that hold this title currently.
Should any of the teams competing in the Rugby Six Nations Cup Event be able to beat all the others they will be awarded the “Grand Slam” title. This is another title that all teams contest hotly and has been played for even when it was the Five Nations Championship. Of all the teams that participate only 3 have been able to win this title in consecutive years. This being England, France and Wales. Also when it comes to who has won this title the most at present England lead with winning it twelve times, followed by Wales who have won the “Grand Slam” title ten times, As for the other teams France have won it eight times, Scotland have won the title three times and Ireland just twice.
As one of the most popular rugby competitions, the Six Nations gets a lot of attention across the United Kingdon and Europe from rugby supporters. Trophy Store supply a range of trophies including rugby trophies and other sports such as golf, tennis and badminton.
