The Tool Belt’s Advantage

July 30th, 2010 Posted in Shopping and Product Reviews

As a construction worker, you surely could not imagine moving around the work site with a load of several tools in your hand. Unless these tools are just a screwdriver set and pliers, you could have all the excuses for complaining about this. Of course, if you are building a home and you are just at the early stage, screwdrivers are certainly not the tools you would be using. Instead, you would be using hammers, saws, and other basic carpentry tools. These are things that could be bulky and heavy.

It is impossible for them to carry all their tools in their hands, which is why they can either wear tool belts or put these all in a tool box. Here lies the dilemma of the workman; should he use a tool box or just wear a belt for carrying tools? Both have their advantages as well as disadvantages and the challenge is to weigh these properly so that a wise decision can be made.

One huge advantage in wearing tool belts though is the ease in carrying the tools these provide. Since every piece is tucked in the belt or in a pouch that is attached to it, the workman can have both hands free to hold on to other things or to balance himself. As a result, it is deemed as the safer option for construction workers. There is less possibility of tools slipping or falling accidentally from one’s hands while negotiating with a steep ladder or while trying to keep balance.

The toolbox, on the other hand, has more disadvantages in terms of safety. This is heavy and moving around and climbing ladders can be quite tough with it. It is also quite cumbersome and dealing with heights can be more dangerous while carrying it. A number of accidents have occurred in many work sites involving not just tools falling but of sets of it from toolboxes. These instances have caused injuries or even deaths of workers.

Nobody can work with one hand while the other holds on to a toolbox; they have to leave the box somewhere and go to it only to get some tools. Of course, this could means time is wasted a lot as it may take many many minutes just to get a tool and if accumulated, this could spell into hours spent for just going back and forth to the toolbox. By using tool belts such waste of time could not occur. This is because the tools are just by your waist. You do not have to take even a few steps to get a tool as all you have to do is to reach for it at your sides.

By attaching pouches to tool belts, you could carry more tools with you. However, there are still limits to this. With so many tools around your waist, you could be too heavy enough to make you feel uncomfortable at work. With a toolbox, you can have more tools with you, regardless of their weight and size. However, you have to adjust these according to the toolbox size though. If you put safety first though, belts are still the better choices.
