Improving Your Home With A Summer Painting Project

June 9th, 2009 Posted in business

Once Summer rolls around, we start to notice that there is more free time to get things done around the home. If you are looking to create a fun home improvement project for the Summer months, painting your home can be a rewarding experience that only takes a small commitment in funds.

Preparation is the first step. You won’t be able to do much if you have the wrong tools for the job, or if you come under-prepared. Make sure you have all the paintbrushes you need, rollers, ladders, cloths, paint, tape, plastic wrap, and anything else you can think of. While you’re at it, plan out a lunch break before you get started so you know when you can take a rest and when to get back at it.

Next you will need to move all the furniture out of the room to prevent spilling paint on them, but also to get things out of the way for a quicker paint job. Some types of furniture might be too hard to move by yourself so you can instead put a long cloth over it. At this point you will want to also tape off any sills or doors so you don’t get paint on them as well.

Old homes have a lot of cracks and wholes in the wall through decades of wear and tear. While that is normal, proceeding to paint with the defects present isn’t. Find someone who can fix such things first if you can’t. Otherwise the paint will make the eyesores appear worse, and you will have to exert more effort in repainting the affected area.

There are two main types of paint you can use: oil-based and water-based paint. You will see experts using oil-based paints over the other types since it dries slower, and allows for a more stable coverage as a result. Oil-based paints can be hard to apply correctly, and you may have to apply special types of primer in order to get the right effect.

Try to accomplish as much as possible of an area before calling it quits for the day or for a small break. Once paint starts drying, it can be hard to get an even coat of paint if there is a gap in between painting times. If you notice one area of paint seemingly off color, you can do small touch-ups along the way.

Final Thoughts

As a last tip, invest in paint removal options such as paint thinner or a razor to take off any mistakes that seemed to have made their way onto your paint job. Don’t be scared to ask for help from a professional if you happen to need it.
